Blu Ray Movies: True 1080p or just Transferred to 1080p?

Some movies like ZODIAC were shot in 1080p but are we being sold short when it comes to many others in so far as are they too being short 1080p or are movies just been taken and being transferred/scaled up if you like to 1080p on BD

A lot of old films too I guess have simply been transferrred/scaled up to 1080p on BD and therefore one has to beg the question are most Blu Ray Discs in fact true Blu Ray Discs...I'm not so sure

Most movies are shot on film which has a much higher resolution than 1080p, so upscaling doesn't come into it.

Indeed - many more pixels to play with on a good film print.

Of course, this all assumes they do go back to the original film for each and every BD transfer...

Indeed - and in the case of some of the rush-released BD 'catalogue' titles, I suspect not. I always look out for 'remastered for Blu-ray' or 'restored from the original' on the box/blurb - and if in doubt, rent from Lovefilm first to check it out!

When you go to the pictures, can you imagine 1080p on a 40ft x 25ft screen! It would be like watching ITV on the big screen!
