Blu-ray DVD upscaling

I have an ageing Denon 2910 DVD player and was wondering if current blu-ray players do a better job of the DVD up-scaling and if id notice much of a difference in picture over my Denon as i recall it was a pretty good player when i bought it! I was thinking of either the Sony 570 or the new 770 (if there proves to be any difference in the 2)

Yep, I had the same dilemma when purchasing the Sony 370 BDP

Still think the Denon is the better upscaler, however SQ from the 370 is much better via HDMI (IMHO), so it's a bit of quandry really

If you ponder and deliberate on the ability of the 370 dvd upscaling you will find fault (is it because you have seen the pristineness of BluRay and now just upscaled dvd from the same machine?) but seems to me that PQ is compromised anyway when being upscaled, it is just the degree of compromise you are prepared to live with I guess

I have the S370 and believe it has a fantasic scaler in it. Most people agree, but others have said its a little soft

Mines anything but soft so id say its down to how clean your mains supply is. If its poor, then the denon would probably be better due to having a better power supply. If its clean like mine, the sony is VERY good

I too will vouch for the Sony BDP-S370 - it is a very clean DVD upscaler.

I had the older 360 - and it was noisier in both DVD and Blu-ray.

I was originally looking to change my Panny DMP-BD80 but now that i have tried the scalers on others i still haven't seen better than this. Not sure about the newer models but i am guessing they won't have got worse.

If you're really need great upscaling look at Marantz BD7004 or Denon 2010, both of which have an Anchor Bay chip set. Realta is anothet chipset that appears in high end amps etc.

The upscaling on my marantz is really good. Band of brothers on DVD was gobsmacking and upscaled Terminator Salvation looked as good as many blu rays.
