Having owned a full HD Sony TV for a couple of years and enjoyed the HD content fromSky, I've decided that now is the time to take the plunge and get a Blu Ray player. The remainder of my home cinema system is about 12 years old now, and I know it needs updating but I can only do it a bit at a time. My amp is a Yamaha DSP-A592, and due to it's age I need analogue 5.1 output from the new player. I thought this was going to be simple but having narrowed my potential selection down to 3 I find that all of them seem to have potential pit falls if using the analogue outputs, (if articles on the net are to be believed). The 3 are;-

Sony BDP S550 - seemingly I may have problems getting sufficient sub-woofer output

Pioneer BDP 51FD - Does not decode all the formats into analogue

Panasonic DMP BD80 - lip synch problems if tv is connected via HDMI and analogue outputs are used.

Can anybody tell me if these problems do exist with these players, or if I can 'get around' them, and if so which one should I go for, (or indeed is there another one I should be considering?).

Or is the bottom line that I should upgrade the amp first, and wait before going over to blu ray. All helpful suggestions gratefully received.

I have a 550 and I didn't have any sub issues with my legacy amp (I've since upgraded to an HD decoding amp with HDMI). I was able to adjust the levels on mine, but I guess it depends on the model though. The main problem was that adjusting the levels for analogue BD meant digital DVD was out, but I rarely watch DVD any more so it wasn't an issue for me. You could always set the levels for the other five channels lower than the sub in the player's audio options to address any LFE issues.

I've only had lip-sync issues on one title in almost two years (T2: Skynet Edition), but of course they cleared up after I switched to HDMI.
