Wanted to throw my BD player in the bin last night. You're watching a film, you want to make a cup of tea so you press stop. You can't resume, you have to go all the way back to the start and find your place. Great.

So instead of stopping for such breaks I press pause. But, once the screen saver kicks in and I try to resume by pressing play or pause I might the message 'operation not supported... blah blah blah', so have to stop it go back to the beginning...

What a chore. We now have this 'wonderful' high definition technoloogoy with a hopeless user experience that can be bettered by a VCR...

Rant over.

... oh and yes, BDP firmware is up to date.

That's odd - never had this issue with my Sony S550...

Have to agree with roger06. It strikes me as a
technology that was rushed to market prematurely to fend off the competition
that was out there. So what we get as a result is the user experience you
describe. As good as my blu-ray player is, my old JVC DVD player knocks
it into a cocked hat when it comes to usability and features. And I don't
see much improvement in the user friendly aspects of newer blu-ray players but
I live in hope. My other concern is the cost of discs. I think
there is a real risk that the cost of blu-ray discs coupled with the usability
issues when compared to DVD will hold back the take up of blu-ray. For many DVD gives them all that they want
and blu-ray is expensive and doesn't work as well. They have a point.

Some discs allow a stop-and-resume, others don't. And given the palaver that loading one up entails, I went around the problem. If you use a learning remote, program it to both pause the disc and switch to an unused input on the tv, then resume with a button which selects the correct input and then play. Job's a good 'un.

My PS3 has decided to no longer play Casino Royale for no reason at all - my brother wanted to see what Blu-Ray looked like so popped the disk in... Nothing. Not even a whirr. Took it out, tried again, checked the disk - immaculate, not even so much as a finger print. Tried "The Hangover" instead and all worked perfectly... Confused.com.

This is more of a software issue than hardware.

I have a Sony BDP-360 and you'll find DVDs resume perfectly and some older Blu-ray movies as well.

However many newer Blu-ray releases cannot resume, but you'll find some have a Bookmark feature like Watchmen, and this bookmark will persist even if you switch your player off.

Look for bookmarks or equivalent on your discs.

If I remember, There Will Be Blood also has some kind of resume/bookmark feature.

But I agree, it makes the Blu-ray format seem a bit half-a***d. Disgusting really.

Also look at the way the big companys are plugging bluray at the moment:simple they're not!Obviously they thought bluray would make more billions than it has so now its HD3Ds turn. Most media shops only have a small bluray section compared to say,HMV.People seem to be happy still buying DVDs at the moment(they dont know what they are missing esp with sound quality!) as they look like good value compared to the same bluray movie.Well i'm waiting till the last minute before even considering a 3D TV & 3D bluray player!!

The vast majority of people though just have a telly stuck in the corner with no surround sound. I have to say, if that was me I'd not bother with BD but stick with cheaper DVDs.

I think if you buy online most BDs are a reasonable price. Think what you spend going to the cinema these days...

Which really, makes the whole BD experience even more frustrating!!

Sorry, I meant the issue I quoted i.e. press pause and then getting "operation not supported" error when trying to resume. If I press pause on any Blu-Ray, I'm able to press Play to continue the Blu-Ray without any issue. You might have to press a button to get rid of the screensaver, but then it should just resume. You should be able to do this too, no reason at all why not.

Avator is the reverse.

If after watching the movie, you eject the disc before it reaches the end of the credits, the next time you load it it comes up with the message "do you want to continue?" Yes or No.

If you press yes then it is the very devil to watch the film from the begiining.

That's certainly how it works on my S760, press pause, press play again, doesn't matter if the screensaver's cut in, it'll carry on.

Which totally negates people's case that it's down to the disc. My father-in-law has the S760 and I'm sure he can pause / resume my Casino Royale disk whereas I can't...

I'm thinking of selling the 550 and getting the 370 as I want iPlayer (and it's only £126 on Amazon!) - but would like to know how it handles this issue.

Hi Roger, sorry, I think things are getting confused, there are two points being made in this thread:

1. To press Stop and then be able to press Play on a Blu-Ray and continue playing where you left off seems to be down to a mixture of both the player and the disc. It's annoying.

2. To press Pause and then press Play on a Blu-Ray to continue playing should be something any Blu-Ray does with any disk. As I say, my Sony BDP-S550 (i.e. the same model as you have) does this perfectly, as does the_lhc's on this S760. If yours doesn't, you need to get it looked at as it's faulty.

I also have a Sony 550 run through a Sony TV and am also irritated by this issue, however regarding this specific issue. When I have paused during a film and then had the same message I have found that if you navigate away from that source (on the T.V)I.E to say HDMI 3 and then back to the Bluray source the pause resume function becomes active again.

May be worth a try, good luck!

Thanks - I'll try that next time... much easier than going back to the beginning.

Maybe your PS3 needs a firmware update.

Ive found on my sony that if you press the directional buttons in the center of the controller left or right this brings you out of the screen saver. I totally agree though it really isnt good especially when dvds on the same machine are more usable. Change of topic, what do you think of the dynaudios on the nait 5i?
