Hello folks

I am sitting here in my living room pretty cheesed off!

Yet again the bass speaker on another pair of Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 2 speakers has blown. I purchased these speakers in March this year along with a marantz amplifier & I am so disappointed that it’s happened for a second time.

The reason for posting is, I am wondering if the amp could be at fault. but I am no expert, so any advice would be greatly received.

Also I would appreciate any advice on the question, if the speaker does turn out to be the faulty culprits, what my consumer rights regarding returning the speakers & changing for a different brand or my money back, as I will have lost all faith in the speakers

Hello

yes it has, within a couple of weeks of purchase, took the speakers back & got them replaced with another set.

Did ask wether i might be better going for a more powerfull speaker, but was told by sales assistant that they were fine for my amp marantz pm6002

you should contact Mordaunt Short and find out if this is a common problem with these speakers as you have blown 2 sets now ....

or perhaps you turn the volume up way too high and too quick?

Yes going to contact the Mordaunt Short, maybe in my younger years you maybe have been right regarding turning the volume up way too high and too quick. But now I consider myself, too be a bit more wiser regarding how I treat my hifi, & all my kids have left home so it's only been me who has used it. I was hoping too have this setup up last 10 to 15 years like my last set up.

Simon, was did you have any conclusion with this?

I think I have a similar problem.

I have a pair of Mezzo 2's which are about 2 years old. They have been brilliant put recently the left had speaker has started distorting.

I've noticed on the 6.5" aluminium bass driver cone there is a small bump about the size of a screw head. The only thing I can think is that I've played them too loud and that I've blown or damaged the driver. (The right hand speaker seems to be OK).

I've looked online for speaker repair specialists but there doesn't seem to be much out there (I live in London). I've found the spare part online from "Charles Hyde & Son" for £132.47 but not sure if its wise to buy and replace the part myself, a). Might be technically difficult. and b). might more wrong with the speaker than just the driver.

The other option is to buy a new set, I've found them online for £275 which is a very good price compared to the £450 I paid for the original set.

The speakers are hooked up to a Harman Kardon HK3490 stereo receiver using QED silver anniversary-XT speaker wire with Air Loc speaker termination, music is played through iTunes and put through a Cambridge Audio DAC magic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Jeff Knowles
