OK......so I have had a couple of days to listen to my new speakers....Tannoy Sterling SE's. I have to say that these are a huge investment for me, along with the Quad II / 40 amps, They will have to last me a lifetime. I have to say though that the sound that I get from these is truly amazing, better than anything I have heard, even back in the days when I used to drool over HIFi components that I couldn't afford (not that long ago, I have to add). It must be said that it appears that the speakers are the biggest upgrade.....although the Quads obviously have a part to play. While connected to my MA BR2's the Quads did show an improvement but nothing on the scale of being connected to the Tannoys. This observation beggars the question of .....is the huge sound that the Tannoys produce entirely down to the size of cabinet and the 10" drivers or is it a combination of the synergy between the Tannoys and the Quads. Whatever... I'm happy and that's what counts.....

Pleased to hear youre happy with the sound Ray. Out of interest what made you plump for the Tannoys? Had you heard them somewhere or was it just the reviews?

Edit - I wonder what your old amp would sound like with the tannoys!

LordM, I dont think I could justify spending what the Tannoys cost on the basis of a review. I had heard a pair of the larger Tannoys at an informal get together a while ago. Being homest, I can't remember what they were connected to so I suppose in that sense there was a bit of a gamble there. What I do remember was the huge soundstage and the incredible amount of detail they were able to reproduce even at normal listening levels. Beleive it or not. e'r indoors likes them as well.....must be a first here. Even if she isnt all that 'au fait' with the actual sound she thinks they look nice as a bit of furniture. I have to say though that she immediately noticed the difference in the sound and has made positive comments.. Win win all round.......

I havent connected them to my 540A. Apart from the agro of crawling around trying to get the damn things plugged in, I dont really see the point bearing in mind the huge difference in the levels at which they are expected to perform.

Sorry wasn't suggesting that - just wondered whether hearing them or reading about them had sparked your interest to audition. I only mention the old amp as I've just sold my 540a and plugged her back in for old times sake. It did a pretty good job with the proacs but with none of the clarity and lush midrange I've now got used to.

LordM, dont know what the sorry was for but absolutely no offence taken....however, back on track.....I suppose it was a bit of both....but mainly down to what I had heard. (or rembered that I had heard (another discussion here I think)). Somewhere down the line you have to draw up a shortlist based on either reviews or personal listening experience. Before I go any further let me just clarify that getting a decent demo where I live is virtually impossible and a home demo is totally out of the question. Demos are only available with a limited stock range, in, I have to say an not very demo orientated envirionment. Home demos are a total No No. Being that I am unable to travel very far ( medical probs and all that) somewhere along the line I have to draw on personal experience and also to a lesser extent, opinions of others. So, to cut a long (very long in fact) story short I ended up with with a shortlist of not just the Tannoys (and not just the Sterlings), Proac 130 / 140 or even maybe the 110 or 100's. None of which are available through local dealers. Whats a guy to do????????.

Anyway........Communication with various parties (not just retailers but personal friends as well) eventually steered me towards the Tannoys. A few emails later and behold....I have a pair of Tannoy Sterlings arriving in a couple of days. Local dealers have dipped out this time because they wern't able to offer the service that I needed. Maybe a lesson here for them,

I think the vastly limiting factor previously would've been the BR2 standmount. What you're now getting is not just what the Tannoy is capable of, but the Quad amplification too. No disrespect to the M-S speakers, but they're so far out their league with partnering equipment of that order, it's a wonder they didn't just jump off their stands and reach for the coat-rack!

Yes, a valid point. I thought I could hear the BR2s squeeling...'Get me out of here'

You have the Quad valve amps and the Tannoy 10" dual concentrics, now all you need is the classic Thorens TD160 or TD350 with SME arm

I am quite envious of these speakers.

Not much point....in a moment of madness a few years ago, I gave all my records away. There wasnt that many, just a couple of hundred but I suppose there would have been enough to justify buying a decent deck. Nope....its CD's all the way from now on.
