I have never owned a pair of closed back headphones, only various open backed Sennheiser HD models over the years. I currently own a pair of HD 518 and am overall very happy with them. The only drawback with open backs being that they offer no privacy if you are using them with other people around.

So since my HD 518 seem to spend most of their time plugged into my iMac in my home office, I have decided to get a set of cans purely for my Hi-Fi use in the living room (so the 250 ohms won't be a problem) I noticed that on several BBC Live Lounge videos recently that the headphones of choice in the studios were the Beyerdynamic DT770, so I thought "they must be pretty good if the BBC are using them in the studio, probably pricey though".

Well I discovered they are sub £150 and I've found a pair for &98 with free delivery, so after a few days of thinking about it and reading up on them I've went and bought my self a little Xmas present. Reviews seem mixed for them, only 3 stars from What Hi-Fi, user reviews are mostly very positive, and professional sound engineers seem to have nothing but praise for them. I'm intrigued to know how they will sound compared to my Senheissers which are on the safe side of neutral with a strong bass. If these beyers sound similar, but with more bite in the trebble I should be happy with them.

Just a pointless post really, wondering if anyone else has a pair?

Have you considered the Sennheiser HD25?

Very good sound quality, neutral balance, very comfy, bomb proof construction and replacement parts available if ever you needed them. These are very commonly used by professionals whenever a closed back headphone is required.

I did look at Sennheiser for closed backs too, including the momentum range and also the NAD Viso HP50.

I've had 3 models of Sennheiser headphones since the 90's. The HD 455, HD 565 Ovation and the HD518. All very good and all 3 of them very different sonically, the HD 518 being the best of the 3. I just fancied going for a change of brand. I have some Beyerdynamic DTX-101iE ear buds for iPod duties which are great, so I thought I'd go for the DT 770 for the Hi-Fi. They have replaceable parts too and I like the coiled cable.

I think those Beyers are nicer than the Sennheiser HD25.

Very neutral sounding with punchy bass and detail (and very comfy, unlike the HD25 - although that might just be my head).

I tested them recently and they drove to reasonable volumes from a Windows phone (but did sound better amped). At that price they're a steal.

Personally I take all reviews, especially the "tabloid" reviews, with a pinch of salt :)

Thanks for your input on the sound of the Beyers, one of the main things that seemed to stick out in all of the professional and user reviews was how comfortable they are. I should be able to chill out on the sofa in a world of my own as and when with them.

They should arrive in the next couple of days so I'll report back on how I find the sound.

I bought a pair of DT770 Pro 250Ohm about a month ago. They are what I've been searching for for a long time. Detail, punch, as described here earlier. I did a lot of research and the 250Ohm are said to be smoother.

I've got them from my PC as a source with an Aune T1 (currently rolling some tubes) and they sound superb. A snip at £98, I paid £104.

Enjoy.

I had heard that the 250 ohm ones were less prone to the sibilance problems of the lower impedance versions. I have read many comments from people who say exactly the same thing as you, that they are what they have been searching for, for a long time.

I will be using them with my NAD amplifier which has a very good sounding headphone output, so it should drive these Beyers easily enough and extract good levels of richness and detail out of them. Well I hope so anyway my Sennheiser HD 518 sound incredible plugged into the NAD my Sony CD Player is furnished with a really good headphone output too. I'll look forward to trying them out :)

The spam filter won't let me post the pretty in depth write up I've just written for these. I received the Beyerdynamics today and compared them to my other sets of headphones.

Long story short... The DT 770 are the best headphones I've ever heard! Very balanced, natural, dynamic and highly enjoyable sound. I'd say more, but these stupid forums won't let me.

Overall delighted with these headphones, my Sennheisers sound pretty dire in a side by side comparison. Which really shocked me actually!

Pleased you're enjoying them. I had been reading and researching too much on different headphones - so pleased I pulled the trigger and bought mine. They should only get better over time too. I think the treble on mine has smoothed out a wee bit. Great full-bodied sound with punch.

They are very full bodied, I've never owned any headphones which are equally good with treble and bass like these are. All the headphones I've had in the past are either full of crisp detail but slightly lacking in bass, or decent bass with a lack of openness and clarity.

These DT 770s have an excellent bass responce, honestly it's so good all that's missing is actually feeling it. Very deep, tight and powerful, yet the treble is very crisp and clear with no harshness. I have tried to provoke the treble with some poor recordings and I've not experienced any fatigue or sibilance. I really am extremely pleased with them, my NAD amp has no trouble driving them. Between 8 and 9 o'clock on the volume dial is more than enough sound pressure for me and I can also listen with the tone controls bypassed, they just sound so right.

That doesn't surprise me. I am a huge fan of the DT880 and DT990 which sound great whichever genre of music you're listening to, and just sublime with vocals.

Not at all heavy, I would say acurate.

Yes they deliver a very powerful bass if it's on the recording. If it isn't there then the headphones don't over inflate it. It's a very clean and detailed bass which goes very low into the sub bass too. Not at all boomy or overpowering.

Sorry I know this is my own thread from a year ago, but I just thought I'd update as after a year of using these DT-770 headphones I feel that I should update on my initial comments. It may be of some use to someone out there who knows?

One year of use and I love these headphones, I feel the need to revisit this thread because I feel they are that good! I've always in the past felt like something was lacking with all of the other headphones I've had, usually with the bass or treble. These Beyerdynamic DT-770 250 ohm are just evryhting I could ever want. They are very comfy, no pressure anywhere on your head or sweaty ears. Sound leakage is not an issue at all and they do a good job of isolating external noise too.

The sound is exactly the right balance, very clear and detailed with a nice bright top end, but never harsh. Bass is so accurate, if the recording has a strong thumping bass you can almost feel it. It makes you want to move your feet. Yet more natural recordings still retain a nice warmth and depth without sounding at all over inflated or muddy. It's always a very satisfying quality to the sound. Midrange is as clear and natural sounding as I've ever heard. Vocals are projected very well and every detail is there to be heard.

I use these only with my 2 Hi Fi amplifiers in source direct mode, mainly with the NAD C350 I have in my office room which has my iMac as a digital source going through a Pioneer CD-R that is serving as a DAC and then to the NAD for amplification which drives these Beyerdynamics. I also have an old Lenco L75 turntable as a source in that system too.

My old pairs of Senheisser HD 565 and HD 518 sound like utter garbage side by side with these DT-770s. These headphones get me closer to the music than any other piece of Hi Fi I own. They just let the music shine through without the need to analyse, it sounds like it's all there in the right proportion.

I feel no need to change headphones again unless these break or fall to pieces. If that ever happens I'll be seeking another set of equivilant Beyers.

That's all, if anyone is considering these then I highly rate them! :)

Beyer, with the DT770 Pro, made a headphone that has just about as good of detail as their best Tesla headphones, but the Teslas don't seem to be as good in the bass. Except the new DT1770 Pro, which is flatter/smoother than the older DT770 Pro, but some people might not appreciate the flatter sound. Anyway, a remarkable headphone series, although the 770 offers more for the money than just about anything else.
