I think it all depends on what you listen to and just how strong you want the bass to be.

Many of the models at the lower price range these days emphasise the bass...more than they used to anyway.

£200 is a lot to pay for earphones especially if you are using them on a mobile. As said above the Beyerdynamic MMX101iE should be on your list, along with the Nocs NS800 Monitor and the Klipsch X7i.

All of these are superb buds.

Hi, I have a Sansa Clip as well and whilst it is good for what is is I personally wouldn't stick a £200 pair of phones on it. A much better player then some good headphones after that might be a better option (that's actually what me and 'er are going to do). I've found that the Sansa is challenged when it comes to musical involvement (been using it for ages) and I've also found that adding better earphones doesn't change that...even when playing flacs. HTH (sorry if it doesn't)

I highly recommend Final Audio Design Adagio III.
Great bass (tight and musical) and a midrange to die for.

Having owned previously Etymotic ER-4P and Westone UM2 these Adagios are as good as those.

For £69.99 they are unbeatable value and they can hold their own against 200 pound plus ear phones.

They are recommended on here

http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/best-in-ear-headphones.html

http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/final-audio-design-adagio-iii-isolating-earphones-redwhite-prodid-8837.html

Buy them with confidence.

why blow 200 quid when you can have audiophile sound for 70.?? To me it is a no brainer.

The sound is similar to that of the Senn's IE8 which cost 250 new.

The bass is superb and you can feel it when listening to prodigy or chemical bros. But it is so good that it doe not interfere with the Mids and treble.

I seriously love headphones and own Grados so know what I am talking about.

Call me a headphone connoiseur.

I have owned the Final Audio Design Adagio's for a while now and they never cease to amaze me. They are better than my Westone UM2'S.

And those Westone's cost 240 quid whereas my Adagios cost £58.99.

They are phenomenal for the price, but straight out the box they are muddy and the treble is shrill. Give them 20 hours burn in using a mix of pink noise and some heavy bass dance stuff (prodigy, chemical brothers,Sash.) The bass will tighten up and not be bloated, and the treble will become more detailed. I have been championing the Adagio;s for a while now and to me they are the best in ear monitors I have used and i have had experience with Etymotic er-4p, Senn's IE8 and Westone UM2.

I will endeavour to compare them to my previous in ear phones.

The detail is second to none only being beaten by Etymotics, but the bass is tight and very rhythmical and the midrange is simply lush.

Bass wise I would put them on par with another dynamic driver in ear phone in the Sennheiser IE8. To my ears they sound near identical and yet the IE8 cost 230 quid new and my Adagios were just under 60 quid.

In comparison to the Westones, the bass is much better as it is known a dynamic driver generally gives out better low end that balanced armatures.

Where the UM2 excels is in the treble - the treble is not as bright as the Adagios but is so detailed. The midrange on the Adagio's i find better to my ears. Comfort is slightly better with Westones.

The only problem with the Adagio's - well not really a problem - is it shows up bad recordings. Give it a well recorded album like Metallica's Black Album and it sounds superb. Feed it something like Oasis and it is really awful to listen to - unlistenable to my ears.

This is how good these earphones are.

Pro's:

Uncoloured natural sound

Detailed midrange

Rythmical tight bass

Price per performance

Pretty Comfortable

Con's:

Shows up bad recordings

Treble can sometimes border on being bright

No carry case

I know this rule isn't infallible but just because a £70 pair of earphones is the 5 star (or equivalent award) product doesn't mean it is as good as a 5 star £200 pair of earphones as value for money etc is taken into account. I am no expert but I don't think an RRP £70 pair of earphones could ever be audiophile quality! :)

Just my opinion and I hope to be proved wrong one day!

Before someone spots it in my signature yes I am currently using Bose QC20i earphones and while I only paid £125 for them they are in no way audiophile quality or fantastic value for money but they are the best active noise cancelling earphones (I didn't want headphones) currently (again in my opinion).

I have had my fair share of earphones including (in no particular order): Klipsch X10i, Grado GR8, Grado GR10, B&W C5, Kef M200, Shure E2C, all the different Apple earphones, Monster iBeats, Sony XBA-3iP, Bose MIE2i.

As far as bass goes I would recommend the Sony XBA-3iP or it's bigger brother the Sony XBA-4iP.

I think a £70 pair of phones can be as good as a £200 set.

High price tags do not mean better!!!!!!!

Bose blows. Bose to my ears sound lifeless and dull. Bose are low fi products at expensive prices.

Alessandro MS2i are £200 approx and are better than the Grado sr325i. yet another bargain.

Price does not mean anything.

Even the soundmagic E30's can easily beat some £150+ phones. Balanced armatures at £40 - this was never heard of 5 years ago. But the technology has moved on and is more common hence lower priced products in a market that is so competitive.

The Grado RS1i to my ears is better than the PS1000. And yet it costs over half the price less.

The Final Audio Design Adagio 3 - I would give it a 5/5 and i guarantee in a blind test with 2/300 pound earphones it can hold its own.

In hifi you do find bargains and to my ears this is one.and yes they are audiophile quality at a really good price.

No gimmicks with these in ear phones. Just audio bliss.

was looking at a some soundmagic e10's/E30's as my warm up pair. The e10s have something like 780 reviews on amazon. Thats pretty crazy when you think about it !

i dont doubt what rich is saying for one second, as i know full well that cost doesnt always correlate with performance in hifi. However, i am looking forward to what cheese38 thinks of them as someone with fresh ears so to speak lol.

rich51080,

I never said more expensive means better!

What I was trying to point out was a 5 star product costing £200 is possibly far better that a 5 star product costing £70.

The ambiguity of WHF star system is shown up by this thread as it is very hard to talk in terms of 'best' when comparing reviews from very different price brackets.

I have no doubt that there are times when a 5 star cheap product is blown out of the water by a 3 star expensive product for example, when simply judging on sound performance, when you ignore things like value for money, functionality, usability, etc...

I grant you that it is possible that a cheap 5 star product could be better than a more expensive 5 star product. However, this is not so probable, as manufacturers charge as much as they think they can justify while being competative (to increase their profit margins).

Also, saying 'Bose blows' is a naive sweeping statement and while in my personal experience the few Bose products I have demoed were overpriced and an over emphas on the lows and the highs (and neglect the midrange), you can't throw the baby out with the bath water!

An example is in the area of active noise cancellation headphones where the Bose QC15 has been consistently judged (my numerous professional panels) as being the best product in this category by some margin. But if you don't need noise cancellation then I don't deny far better headphones can be found far cheaper. My personal choice of the Bose QC20i is based on suffering from migraines and I need more portability than the QC15. There will be times that I will use the active noise cancelling feature with NO music playing (when suffering from a migraine at work in a noisy environment). So for me the QC20i are the best fit for a very specific purpose. I also find the Bose tips comfortable during a migraine compared to earphones that get pushed into the ear canal - like my Klipsch X10i which I also use. Again, my B&W P3 serve my needs in a different situation.

The original cheese38 post was asking about earphones that have particularly 'strong bass', which I indicates an emphasis on bass is desired for cheese38. Therefore, I answered with a recommendation that might fit the sound style that cheese38 is looking for. Whereas you on the other hand are telling cheese38 to buy earphones with a different sound style which is totally disregarding cheese38 stated personal preference.

On average a £70 earphone will not be as good as a £200 earphone, but there are exceptions. For example the new RHA MA750. I reviewed it here.

I had those 2 Soundmagics which were good (nothing a little EQ wouldn't fix up good), and have been hearing good also about the Adagio III.

Musical Fidelity EB-33 should suit very well. Strong bass, bombproof build. They are very good. And £79. RRP everywhere at the moment, no discounting allowed.
