Would you purchase a movie that you loved on bd even though you have it on dvd? Just would like to know your opinions.

I am more likely to buy a Blu-ray of a film I love - and therefore probably already have on DVD - than a new movie i'm taking a punt on, to be honest.

If i'm sure the Blu-ray is a step up in terms of sound and vision performance, i'll replace the DVD with the new BD version.

Some movies, however, i'm keeping on DVD because either a) I don't watch them often enough to warrant an upgrade or b) i've seen the BD and it's not a big-enough step up in quality.

Depends on how good the movie is, I have bought Saving Private Ryan, but other than that I am happy with my DVD collection. I watch most of my BD movies on rental from LoveFilm. I shall purchase the LOR trilogy when that comes out later.

Not only would but have, the Dirty Harry boxset, Payback, Dark City (those two are previously unreleased Director's Cuts though) and 2001. They were all on special offer as well otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. I'm desperately trying to avoid buying The Fifth Element as well, having seen a demo at the Bristol Show last weekend.

In fact I think I've bought more stuff I already owned than stuff I didn't, if you count the Dirty Harry films separately, which is cheating really...

Would and have. But the price has to be right.

All of these I own(ed) on DVD....

Band Of Brothers (Circa £15 IIRC)

Matrix Trilogy (£12.99)

In no particular order. Dirty Harry, Signs, Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World, North By North-West, Leon, The Bourne Trilogy (Christmas pressie, cost my Sister £17ish I think), some others I can't recall just now. But pretty much all bought as part of a '3 for 2' or '2 for £20' or similar.

In fact, like the_lhc, I think the films I've bought on BD having never owned them before is a shorter list.

Kung Fu Hustle, Knowing, Transformers 2, Apocalypto, District 9, Anvil, Burn After Reading,

Agree with Clare here.

Most of my blu ray purchases are films i know and love and therefore probably already own on dvd. if its a 3 for 2 deal and i can only find 2 films that i want then i wont bother going for the deal (and ending up with a 'filler' blu ray)

This is probably part of the reason why i wouldn't spend more than £10 on a blu ray unless under certain circumstances (my 5 disc blade runner cost £20 which i thought was a great deal still)

I also would, and have. Pixar films, Band of Brothers, Bourne Trilogy- all absolutely worth the upgrade. Latest upgrade is the just released Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Just arrived and am dying for a spare couple of hours to give it a spin.

Im on your side of the camp, only the odd quality system tester would i spend out for like - Saving Private Ryan, LOTR etc.

Ditto, saves me typing it. Also, join Lovefilm to test out the quality. I did that for Bladerunner and decided it wasn't worth it as an upgrade from the remastered DVD version (lovely though it was).

I will make an exception once the extended LOTR Blu-rays are released.

Cofnchtr:Hi,

Like most of the posts above, I too have more discs that are 'upgrades' from DVD than new purchases.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

In fact, Rush's Snakes & Arrows Live Blu-ray was less than the DVD. I sold the DVD for a tenner on eBay and bought the Blu-ray for £12.00. Well recommended disc by the way.

Tom Moreno: Latest upgrade is the just released Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Just arrived and am dying for a spare couple of hours to give it a spin.

I would love to know what the PQ is like compared to the dvd, one of my favourite films that I already own on dvd but I could be tempted by an upgrade. My only Bluray upgrade is Band of brothers, the other Blurays I bought as I didn't have them on dvd. Mind you I only have around 10-15 Blurays in my collection at the moment, I only tend to buy them if I know I will watch them a few times and of course the quality needs to be a big improvement over dvd. I also tend to wait to buy them until they are on offer, still waiting for Star Trek to come down to a reasonable price......

Just have 2 Blurays: Angels & Demons and I have it on dvd also. Anyway I got this free for purchasing the Sony BDP-S765 player and I have also got Pearl Harbor. I have also ordered from Amazon, We were soldiers, Elton John 60th anniversary Live at Madison Square Garden, Black Hawk Down, 2012 and African Queen. I may buy Saving Private Ryan and Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World which I also have on dvd. I also though of ordering Gladiator but having read in Blu-Ray.com that the transfer was not as good as expected, I am having second thoughts.

I personally would like to upgrade my favourite dvd's to blu ray, and may go for Matrix trilogy, LOTR and a couple

of others, but I have started by getting new releases - Star Trek, X-Men Wolverine, Close Encounters, James Bond

(Casino and Quantum).

The quality of dvd playback improved when I bought the Panasonic BD35 and with a new B&W ASW610 my old

dvd's are having a new lease of life.

Can't wait for Saving Private Ryan, hope its not a heffalump.

It also depends on the quality of your players, if you have a good DVD player the films will look good and there may be no need to up-grade the film to BD? Some BD players are very good at up-scaling standard DVD's and then there is the Toshiba XDE600 which I have, it makes standard DVD's look miles better so I am not in any rush to buy more Blu-rays until I finish watching all my normal DVD;s again!

Certain films will always look better on blu-ray though like UP, it's also framed at 1.78:1 I think so it takes up the entire screen without black bars and looks simply sublime!

Finally there is the sound which on blu ray providing you have a decent system will always out-perform standard dvd dolby digital

I agree the Toshiba is a great player, and i tend to buy films i already own and love if the PQ and SQ is much better. I buy newer films after they get good reviews and i can find them at a reasonable price. Spiderman is my favourite trilogy, but looking forward to LOTR.

Just a quick FYI for everyone: its heavily rumoured that Gladiator is being remastered and will be out sometime this year so i wouldn't buy the current blu-ray version

whether it'll be any better this time around tho remains to be seen

Right finally got sit down to watch this. Short version- excellent and well worth the upgrade from DVD. PQ is good. Obviously the colours are a little on the hazy side, but this is the artistic decision of portraying a drug induced parable in the 70s. My DVD was the 1st release of the film in the US and while the colour palette is much the same the increased detail and clarity keep the image from looking washed out. The biggest upgrade, though, was that my DVD only has a DD 2.0 ProLogic audio mix whereas this BD has a 5.1 DTS MA. What an improvement. The "trip" moments are much more fluid and involving.

That's the trouble with BD discs, they release them just to get them on the market then release a remastered version. Deja Vu. So better to save the purchases for new releases.
