can i use the yamaha av receiver rx-v395rds for surround sound only with the sony 350 blu ray player

You could, but you'll only get standard definition Dolby Digital/DTS, as the Yamaha doesn't have HDMI inputs. Neither does it have mutichannel analogue in, which would allow some players - those with onboard surround decoding for HD audio - to be connected.
