Unfortunately there is a firmware bug in the Cobalt that does not exist in the Red.
On some mobile devices, in this case the Pixel 7, turning volume down to zero results in full blast volume. Using headphones this is a serious hearing loss hazard.
I have had no response from Audioquest, being rather disappointing for a product with this price tag. This issue should be added into the review of the product.

New subber here.
I have the same problem when attempting to use the Cobalt with a Sony NW-A306 DAP.
This device has very weak analogue output, which made the addition of the Cobalt necessary.
The Cobalt blasts out at full volume when connected to the DAP.

Audioquest have ignored my communications.

The cobalt behaves itself when connected to an iOS device, so there seems to be a conflict with Android devices.

The Mojo2 dac has none of these issues.
