Hi there ,I have been looking for a budget amp (around £100 used ) for a while and have reserved an Audio analogue Puccini special edition in a local shop for £99.99 , I can't find many of these on eBay but I like the look and it feels like good quality (very heavy) .I was wondering if it is a good deal for £99 and worth buying ,or should I leave it?

If you like your sound clean, precise and analytical, then I would look elsewhere; but if you like a sound that is smooth, rich and easy on the ear, then this is a good choice. It's a great antidote for the rather "digital" sound that some modern systems (and recordings) can have (which can come across as a bit sterile).

If you match it with speakers that have similar qualities, it "might" all get a bit warm and dark...but that is down to personal taste.

I don't yet lol ....... Only a pair of tannoy mx1 at the moment , but I was looking at getting wharfdale diamond 9.1 at some point ............but looking on eBay a bit more I think a few of these amps seem to have sold for around £250 so (if I could get that much ) I might sell it and look at somting like an arcam avr 250/300 or alpha 10

You really need to hear the speakers pre. with your amp. Wharfedale 9s are not very sensitive and Wharfedale have rep. recently for poor finish. To be honest I would spend more on speakers they make the most difference.

Yep I do understand that but I am not by any means an audiophile and don't listen to a huge amount of music ,this will be used for a film ,game PC and console ,and also music +radio . I had about £200 to spend getting speakers and amp and don't think I could do much better than that in my budget, yes I could spend a little---a lot more on speakers but that would leave me with a sub standard amp ......so .............+ now I have found that some of these amps have sold for £250 on eBay ,I am pretty my decided that I will get it , the question now is should I sell it and spend the money on buying ,many an arcam avr300

Well you could buy that Puccinni amp and some Q Acoustic 2020i for £250. Other options would be some used speakers, some of the Missions are very good. I presume you get a warranty on the amp? Maybe you could hear it with some speakers?

If it's good condition, buy it, and see how you get on. I think it originally sold for about the £800 mark. I had one briefly but it didn't tick the boxes. Too similar to the Marantz PM6010-KI that I had at the time (which makes me wonder if Cno is thinking of the right amp, as I found it rather clinical and hence why it went back). That is as much to do with the speakers and source though, so give it a spin. I imagine it might drive the Tannoys very nicely. If not, sell it on Ebay and you'll make your money back (or Gumtree).

If you owned it, then your insight is far more valuable.

I think it was the original version that I heard briefly, which had a smooth tube-like sound (for a SS amp). I believe the SE version was a bit beefier, giving more guts to the bass but retaining the "grain free" treble and a refined mid-range.

I brought it and will test it out on Monday properly ,it looks in good condition (there is a small dig in the metal face and a few small scratches around the edges ,but for £99 seems like a bargain as these are going for over £200 on eBay

The point I was making is that it is a fracking good amplifier, better than the alternatives suggested.

Shame you bought it - was going to ask where you saw it and give them a bell

Ha it was in the local cash converters ,I was only joking about the speakers I knew what you meant ,I was just laughing at how long it would take to save up for £2000 speakers (and what the wife would say lol) .....I got the wires I needed today so am about to try it out (saddly on a £5 pair of tannoy mx1) I got a day earlier , then it will likely find its way to eBay as ,I can't afford that great speakers and wanted an amp 2/3 for av purposes (PC and TV and ps3) so if I can get £230-£250 for it I might buy a Yamaha av amp and some speakers with the cash

Damm it ,just tried it and one of the tannoys is completely *#*#*#ed and the other is fine some time but starts to distort on some bits (loud rocky bits) ... The amp seems to work good tho ,I think ,and they had a pair of wharfdale diamond 7.1 in the shop I bought the tannoy from ,so I will swap for them and see if its any better

Just to be sure, turn the amp off, swap speaker cables and try again. If the problem is with the same speaker, then yes, it is the speakers. If the prob moves to the other speaker, it's the amp or the source.

Yep done what you said and it seems that all the right outputs or the amp are giving distortion and the left are fine ,so looks like I am going to have to take back the amp and once again shelve my dreams of a decent stereo lol ......

I don't think its the scource ,but I don't have any scorce other than my TV to try it on , I also found this. http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/audio-analogue-puccini-problems

Which seems to be the same issue and do sent seem like he ever manager to sort it ,and even if I could get it fixed its likely to cost a lot more than I have so ...........its not looking good for the Puccini

On the bright side that means I know have a. Pair of tannoy mx1 and diamond 7.1 for £10 so now all I need is an amp

Given two thirds of your time is spent on AV, this could well be a better option.......and Arcam AV amps are not too shabby with 2 channel. I owned an AVR 350, and had a 300 on loan for a while. They were played through Kef IQs, which imo worked well.

.
The 300 is way out of price range now I was looking at trying to get Yamaha rxv373 which is a bargain at £150 ,but I am going to have to give up for now I reckon

Fair enough.

IME. It pays to go in the right direction to start with, as the convoluted route (which may often appear cheaper), usually works out more expensive..
