I have got my PS3 hooked up to my DACMagic and have ripped all my CD's in ATRAC at 352kbps. I do also have all my tunes ripped as lossless WAV's to an external hard drive. As my amp is being repaired i can't test the difference between the two (if any) Has anyone any experience of ATRAC sound quality? I know Sony used to use it for Mini Discs but just wondered.

Thanks

From what I read ATRAC was probably the best compressed format - superior to both MP3 and AAC - my friend has a portable MiniDisc player/recorder and swears by it. (MiniDisc uses ATRAC).

I'd be surprised if you couldn't notice the difference on your system. I've not used ATRAC but I can hear a clear difference between 320kbps mp3 and WMA Lossless and I've been told that there is a noticeable difference between WAV and WMA Lossless (of any lossless codec).

I would "expect" to hear a difference but you never know. I have heard a few people on here saying that they can't tell the difference between 320kbps and lossless but i suppose it depends on the system and how good/bad the listeners hearing is. If there is hardly any difference i will probably just play files straight from the PS3 and just use the HD as a backup. I will just have to wait until my amp comes back so i can test.

Duhhh - and did this source explain why, knowing that lossless means that exactly the same information is retrieved after unpacking?

On another forum there is an ongoing poll as to who can tell the differences between bit rates and nearly 50% admit to not hearing a difference between 320kbps and above and about 30% admit to struggling to hear a difference.

Incidentally, I struggle to tell the difference between Ogg Vorbis 320kbps to Apple and WAV lossless
