I heard a friend's set of SCM100a active speakers at the weekend, quite amazing. These are the £4000 a piece active monitors from ATC. They are huge, easily 3' tall and 65kgs each.

Sound stage was vast and the sound powerful, but clear and clean. I listened to the xx, Jacqueline du Pre playing Elgar and
a bit of pink floyd, all off CD. Even cranked it up to 6, which was giving a average volume of 100db, according to the "decibel" app on the iPhone.

I heard details in the bass on the xx I'd not even heard on headphones and a range of tonality to the bass too, orchestral music was stunning. I noticed that there was no mention of these on the site, so though I'd add some comments given how well thought of the SCM20 speakers are. Clear neutral and no hint of distortion or hardening up, it felt like the music was in the room, not amplified, unforced. Would love a pair.

cheers Gavin

ATCs actives are amazing - I was seriously impressed when demo ing my 40s. Add a decent pre and source - job done.

And how good is The XX LP? Can't get enough of it.

agreed on both, must have listened to the xx maybe 20 times now.

the 100s are a bit out of my league, both size and costs, but I'm looking forward to hearing them again on my mates boat, hence being able to crank them up.
