AT33PTG/II - Technics SL1500C overhang

I have got a near-new AT33PTG cartridge, which came mounted to an Audio Tecnica headshell with pre-drilled holes - and which I am very keen to try before returning my "humming" Simaudio Moon...

The issue is that at this is quite a bit shorter than the 52mm suggested overhang for my Technics TT... Not measured it exactly but I would say far as it goes is around 45mm.

So - how bad is this and should I mount it on another headshell (a task I hate with a passion x10)?

I have asked this question to someone I know who is well up on AT cartridges and Technics turntables. If he replies with an answer I will let you know.

Have you a Technics overhang Gauge or Protractor ( if not do not buy cheap ones )

£509 AT33PTG/II cartridge is overkill on £799 SL1500 Turntable
£1195 SL1200GR2 turntable with a cheaper cartridge will should better £100

Also match weight of headshell is correct for the tonearm for best results
AT website shows 10cu which is low & probably need more mass added to the tonearm/headshell
#AT33PTG/ii show 10 x 10-6cm/dyne (100Hz)
could might need to convert ( 1.4-1.7 ) 100 to 10hz on some 10hz compliance calculators ideally 8-12hz resonance

Have you got a picture of the headshell?
It's an AT-LT13a - with 3 pre-drilled holes only at the bottom.

Anyway, just bit the bullet and mounted it on my fully adjustable Technics stock headshell. Not measured with calipers or other precision instrument but "by eyeball" it is around right - maybe 1mm +o-

Yeah half of that flew miles over my head I'm afraid. But yes of course I will try to set as close to the specs as I can. Increased tracking weight to 2.2 aa recommended and might tack a coin to the headshell as I have read in a few threads...

As per it being overkill hey, whatever I guess. It might be £799 (which is annoying as it was £1000-1100 when I bought it - luckily I paid £650 used) but it is still a decent turntable. P.s. I paid £250 for the cartridge...

Why would you want to attach a coin to the headshell that will make the tracking force even more. Don't forget that if you damage the stylus it's not replaceable.

Brilliant Enjoy.
Thanks!

To be honest, I'm thinking about selling it. I have to return my phono stage (as it has a hum - very much audible at increased gain) and I have just pulled the plug on a new (used) amp, so might have to live with MM for the time being. And MC carts seem anyway a lot of faff. Capacitance loading gain weight mass... I just want to listen to music 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just wanted to see what the fuss was about and if I could tell tye difference with my wooden ears haha

Yup. That is another one of the "faffy" things I was talking about. As far as I can see, there's only one company in the UK that does retipping... With my sausage fingers and general proclivity to damage things by excessive use of force, snapping a stylus is always on the cards. With my MM, a replacement would set me back £150 or thereabouts - this would be twice as much. Nah.

As far as phono stages go I wholeheartedly recommend Classic Audio Spartan phono stages I have two of them.

YES! I think we actually had this discussion before. I was dead set on the Spartan, then saw an ex demo Simaudio Moon 110LP at £130 off (also liked the slightly higher flexibility in terms of settings for MC - though I now realise it is too much faff...). It has however quite an annoying hum, so it is going back.

Waiting for a Rega Elex-R now - will see how the built in phono goes with my new 540ML cart then decide if to buy a separate phono. And this time it will be a Spartan... And if I will want to keep the MC.
