am after a small set of speakers for a bedroom system (to be connected to a Pioneer A400 and a Pioneer PDS-703 CDP) ....

there is an old guy selling a pair of AR7 speakers plus a Pioneer SX-700L receiver and he lives approx 2 miles away (not an ebay sale) ...

just phoned him, he says both the speakers and the receiver are in very good condition and he has owned them since new ... complete with original instructions etc ... have told him I will have them and will collect later .... Price: £30 for the whole set

seems like a bargain to me? ... not sure if I can connect the SX700L receiver to my Pioneer SA-9800 (has FM and LW) or perhaps it sounds better than the A400 ... time will tell

Anyone got any comments on the speakers?

I'd go for it. For £30 you can't really lose.

I used to have the AR18s and a NAD 3020 and they were superb together. (Although that was 27 years ago!)

I think the AR18 and AR18s were updated versions of the AR7. (Except for 'ferrofluid' damped tweeters.)

You will get 8" bass units in a sealed box ('Acoustic Suspension' as Acoustic Research called it. And they basically invented the concept of the air in a sealed box loudspeaker acting as a spring.)

Try and see if the bass drivers are not punctured or torn and ensure the surrounds are not perished.

thanks Chebby .... these have 8 inch bass drivers ... pretty old but seller says he had them from new and never misused them ... all drivers in good condition and driver surrounds show no signs of wear ....

guy sounds very old and honest ... he also says that he has never connected any other seperates to the system, and used it solely as a radio ... he also says there is an fm aerial in his loft ... If I can dismantle it I can have that for free

The receiver must be worth more than £30 on its own ... if I am not happy with the system, my daughter can have it for her room (will get a cheap cd player to connect to the receiver .... think its 40 watts at 8 ohm) and an added bonus is that she can listen to the radio aswell

I have just updated my response so sorry about duplicating what you said about the drivers and surrounds. Obviously I was typing whilst you were typing.
