Yup, I haven't converted any of my lossless files as yet (only just got them all re-ripped from all my CDs), but setting Kind to "Apple Lossless" in the smart playlist settings has put them all in here. Looking at my bitrates, I've noticed some of my lossless songs are actually in a bitrate of less than 320Kbps - these seem to be huge long tracks so I'm guessing they've got long periods of silence in them before playing a "hidden track" (stupid pretentious artists!!). So this is something to be on your guard for. John, does not setting Kind to "MP3" get all your MP3s? I can't tell as I haven't converted mine yet and don't really want to look into this as yet!

I imported the very slickly recorded Robbie William's album 'Swing when you are winning', which has a final track containg a 20 minute silent gap as a higher quality AAC file, and the bit rate came out as 86kbps! I imported it a second time and it came out fine. It is certainly worth checking that all tracks appear on a smart playlist if it is set up dependent on bit rates.

Hi All,

I recently bought an Ipod 32G Touch, 2nd edition. All music ripped to 320kb MP3's in Itunes.

Ripped a few CDs in Lossless (about 10) and noticed that on the Touch the tracks stutter through out. Did a web search it appears to be a known problem. Switching off the Autolock fixes it!

Is there a way of ripping in lossless on Itunes But Transfering to an Ipod Touch at a 320KB rate.I want to Keep everything from this point onwards in lossless as I am going to stream using a Airport express to my AV amp.

Any Ideas ????...... Everything would be great if Apple would be able to fix this problem!!!!!

BTW, there's a firmware update (2.2.1) available which specifically states that it fixes this issue. Downloading now, will let you know....

...and it does appear to do what it says on the tin.

typical Apple!!

I created my 2 play lists, 320KB and Lossless...

then whilst getting my ipod out of its protective case the 'Home' button kind of cracked and the ipod stopped working!!!!!! - White screen of death!

So I re-flashed it, and it was then I noticed the FW update. clight crack nr home button, but fully functional!

so getting to the point... I have not tried it! lol

However the 320KB will give me more space any hows... the only problem is that if logging on from another PC on teh same network the 2 smart playlists aint there, and I get all my music... in both formats! A tad annoying!

Has anyone here tried it???? i might give it a try tonight with an album to see if I can hear the difference!

Lossless against 320? Funnily enough I was doing that this morning (not on purpose, I'm not that sad

), and one sounded a bit more airy than the other (though actually Remote wouldn't tell me which was which, so maybe the 320 sounds better

so have you seen an improvement in the lossless stuff? i.e. non stuttering!

Yeah yeah... you are doing some IPOD Compression music tests... we all know you are! lol

Sorry to be so slow. Where on the latest 2.2.1 update does it show the lossless to lossy transfer ability?

I will be out of the country for 3 weeks and my Touch (16gb) will be loaded up with the complete Soldier, Soldier and a couple of series of Frasier (take a bow, Handbrake!) so I need my current ipod music to be trimmed down from its current Lossless format. I know I can create 320kb playlists, or even a second library, but a simple down-converting transfer from my library to Touch would seem ideal.

Please show me the way!!ÿ

Soldier, Soldier!! If you are just talking about music rather than video the easiest option is to change your import settings in preferences in iTunes to the filetype and bitrate you want and go Advanced>Create ........ Version. Alternatives are Max and XLD.

Thanks, Octopo, but that only seems to allow me to create apple lossless versions, which is what the whole of my library already is - it would not highlight ipod or tv options. I must have missed something along the way. JD seemed to imply that 2.2.1 would allow me to download from library to Touch at a lower bit rate. Couldn't even get close after 20 mins of Googling.

BTW the 'Soldier' thing is just that I will be in HK for a few days and a series was shot out there, pre handover. Lesley Vickery looks OK as well!

Sorry if I wasn't clear, we've had a couple of subjects intertwining here - the firmware update fixed stuttering on an iPod Touch, which was the original query.

If you want to convert your lossless files to a lower bitrate, you first have to set the import bitrate lower in iTunes - say 320k AAC. The right click option will then give you "Create [320k] AAC version" instead of "Create lossless version".

I did mention earlier that it would be a great idea if you could do it on the fly when you sync your iPod, which is what you can do with the Shuffle, but no joy as of yet.

Thanks John. Reading back I can see where I lost the thread (and plot!). I will have to do it the 'ugly' way. As you said, it would be nice to know if there is someone out there working on an App. that would enable such a thing. Fingers crossed.
