I heard a Stax Lambda system once but couldn't afford to own one.

There must be reviews online somewhere but how helpful they would be is questionable.

It is true that Stax are highly regarded, but are too expensive for most people.

Here is a forum thread on the subject of entry-level Stax setups, which may be helpful to you http://www.head-fi.org/t/676272/the-entry-level-stax-thread

I think Dale Thorn is our forum member, with the most experience of reviewing headphones, so maybe he will have reviewed some Stax headphones.

I had only one Stax, the SRX MK3, which was quite bright. The best Stax according to the most trusted reviewers is the SR009. The Stax solid state amp for the SR009 is the most economical, but I hear that the recommended valve/tube amp is better. I would expect the SR009 to be similar to the Senn HD800, but being electrostatic, the sound would be more 'palpable' (difficult to explain unless you've lived with one).

Ok thanks, there's nothing worse than wasting the salesmans time ,but I'd like a demo just to hear the difference between my 3grand system and a possible 10grand system.im just very curious.i didn't even know headphone amps existed 18 months ago.

One more suggestion: Many times I've evaluated headphones in a store, even a quiet store, and they never failed to sound different at home. I finally realized that the noise level at home at night is far lower than even the quiet demo rooms, and another factor is being totally relaxed at home, which for a lot of people wouldn't be the same in a store. But to hedge that bet, if you could compare the 2 systems side by side in the store, that could be a good way to go.
