Another problem with the ever pleasing A32...

Yes, it's that time of the week folks: It's name-the-fault-with-the-A32 TIME! And so today we have a nice high pitched buzz coming from the speakers when the screen is on dim! Turn the screen to bright, most of it goes but produces a more warbly sound and turn the screen off and all you are left with is the rather high noise floor. So who's going to be the first to give a solution to Hughes' problem today? Put simply, this amp is starting to annoy me now - oh yes it plays a good song, but it does it when it likes and only at ear popping volumes... Oh why, oh why, didn't I buy a Supernait?

Rather different price bracket?[/quote]

But worth every extra penny, IMO.

Rather different price bracket?? may be! but the SuperNait can rival an amp which cost twice as much with ease. and considering that the build in DAC is as good as cd 5i then, bob your uncle, you just save yourself nearly a grand on cd player........ Every house should have one :)

Yes agree with Andrew on this one, had mine for about six months now and it cost a bomb but well worth it probably never need to upgrade it.

I am listening to it now playing a Joshua Bell recording of Barbers violin concerto, absolutely sublime..........

I am not for one second suggesting it isn't, but the Arcam cost him about £800 - So why compare it to a £2000+ amp?

It's like saying, I don't like my ford focus, why didn't I buy the BMW M3???

I know, I know I'm comparing to something twice the cost (I could have got a Supernait for £1650) but it's just soooo annoying.

You see, the main problem with my hi-fi, is that it makes you listen to the hifi, not the music. I'm constantly having to turn the treble down, turn the bass up, adjust the tracking weight, adjust the speakers AND CHANGE CD! WHAT HAPPENED TO CD CHANGERS?

Without sounding like a premadonna, I used to love listening to music on my old JVC mini hi-fi thing with it's crappy old Sony sub connected to it. It went loud enough, it sounded good to me. Then I took the plunge of upgrading and never have I made such a big mistake in my life! Now I'm listening to tonality, the treble, the bass and THE STUPID SOUNDSTAGE WHICH IS NONE-EXISTANT! And then there's the fact as soon as you turn it up, it kills your ears with the distortion it produces and the speakers are too big, and they boom and there's no radio and it doesn't have a flashy EQ and it can't play tapes and it takes ages to "warm up" and the cable's too thick (it's flat aswell) and it isn't powerful enough!!!

Please someone suggest what I have to do to make hi-fi worth it! I've spent over £2000 on equipment and I liked the music of my old one better! Infact, I might just sell it and buy myself a nice mountain bike.

hughes123, did you get your amp from a shop? if i spent that much on an amp and found it buzzed when it shouldn't, the shop would be getting me another one or a refund.

still, summer is nearly here, and with a new mtb you could be out looking flash on the trails. a local shop has a santa cruz bullit that screams my name every time i pass it.

Lovely, them Santa Cruzes. Had a Rift Zone (Marin) a few years ago but sold it. Since then, mainly due to the gym I've put a bit of weight on ... 16st to be precise

and now its hard tails only. Went to primera, a local dealer last week and had a look at a specialized Rockhopper Pro ... how things have improved since my Marin ...

Yeah those Rockhoppers are superb! I've got a GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc from '05, but all my mates have Specialized Enduros, Kona Stabs, Kona Coilers you name it, they've got it. Then again, I'm not planning on killing myself anytime soon!!!

Its ok if you are small and in your teens or early twenties. You bounce back. I'm not in my early twentys, heavy and 6.3". If I come off it'll do damage to me and the environment around me.

Biggest problem I have is the fit. Most MTB Brands have to short a top tube for me (incl. GT). There are very few that feel right, amongst them Specialized and Cannondale but I've compared the two and found SP offers better value for money.

Have you tried the Scott Scale series? They might suit you better. I'm quite a small lad, so I have trouble with the reach on some handelbars in comparison to the frame size.

...it is square meters to be fair. No I have a Rage 2.5m and it still has a lot of grunt. In fact I put it up in high winds at the weekend and before I knew it I was 5 feet ahead of where I started....hmmm....I'd recommend it, esp with a buggy....

I would get one, but I've got nowhere to use it! I've always wanted to have my own LandRover and go offroad, but there's nowhere to drive one even in the Ox/Bucks countryside!

I don't think it's your amp that's at fault. Sounds like speaker problems to me. It's just that the amp shows them in their true light. I don't have any treble issues ever on my Arcam stuff no matter which CD I have on. A balanced system obviously.

I would buy some ProAc Studio 100s or 130s, but I want some GET-UP-AND-GO to my speakers, because currently the sound is so boring...and when I use my Debut III, the sound is sooooo quiet even at -15db with the input trim at max!

Also, I recall seeing pictures of Huges' listening room somewhere on this forum... definately finding some speakers which are happy with that space would be the next step, but I reckon he'll struggle.

In a small awkward room, a decent mini with all it's 'unpure' signal processing to boost all the pleasant frequencies will probably give him the most pleasing sound at a realistic volume in the space he has.

My old Aiwa mini form 1991 (the NSX D55, to be precise, yes, that's right) which cost £400 then is still used in my garage to provide music in the garden - it still thumps along very pleasingly with loads of bass, punch and attack.

Because you can infinately adjust the tone and processing you can make it sound good in any space... ("good" is obvioulsy relative in this context...) Want more bass and punch? Hey, turn up the T-Bass. Want more sparkle? add some "BBE Enhancement" (get on). Trebble not clear enough? play about with the EQ :)

Sure all this rubbish will make it deviate from the original recording in a pureists eyes (ears?) and yes, stuff like depth, dynamics and soundstage will be compromised.....but will the music sound good to Hughes in his room? He's already hinted as much!
