Here we go guys. I'm (still) looking for a surround sound system, and am torn between, what I had originally absolutely definitely decided on which is the Monitor Audio BR 5.1 (changing the FX for the BR2s) or, I have now seen the Kef KHT2005.3 for almost half the price. I'm wondering weather I would hear a massive difference between the two systems given that it would be my first 5.1 set up and don't have a particularly good ear for subtlety. I know the Kef is a "style" system which should mean that the answer should be a big yes. I will be using an Onkyo 608 amp. Or should I go for the Kef and put some of the money saved towards a better amp, say the Yamaha V667. Will be used for film and TV (Standard and HD) and in a room approx 5.5m x 6m.

Thanks as always.

ive never heard the kefs, but ive had the br5 pack, and even with my fairly basic yamaha rxv765 the sound was very good, very powerful with those br5 fronts (now replaced with rx6's), i doubt the kefs would give the same experience, simply because of their size compared to br5 fronts, centre and br2 rears...

I knew I could rely on you for a reply Max!! I've noticed your sig for a while now and have practically the same set up in mind as I'm looking for, both in AV and Hi Fi!! Although I opted for the Samsung over the LG having seen both (might still be in the market for a big screen TV downstairs though and will def be looking at the LG 550 maybe??

Anyway, yeah, I guessed that would be the answer and like I've said, I've had my eye on the Monitor Audio for some time and had pretty much set my heart on it, but now the Kef's have come down in price where I am and I've have been reading some pretty good reviews. Never really looked at style speakers before as I believe, for once, I can really make the most of a big sounding system having just moved to a detached house in the middle of nowhere!!

well the br5s are pretty decent hifi speakers too, the kefs wouldnt be anywhere near as good for music, im sure for home cinema they would be ok, as you say reviews are very good, but as you say they are style speakers really, if i were you id go the monitor audio route, but id buy everything seperately, and instead of the brw10 sub id get an rsw12, apparently its much better..

I've been comparing prices and buying each item separately will save me about 200gbp. And that's from the same shop as the package. I can't work that out. Anyway, I've always looked to change the sub, but can't really stretch to the RSW12. How much do you know about Velodyne subs? Been looking at the impact 12 or SPL 800i ones in particular.

Cheers.

How much do you wanna spend on a sub?

I have a thread on page 2 (I think), talking about best subs for under £300.....

Seems the BK XLS200 is very popular....

If only £200, the BK Gemini 2 seems popular too.....

I'm in Sweden so prices are inflated here!!! I've been looking at around 400gbp, which will get me either the Velodyne 12 or 800i (for a 100 more), or the B&W ASW 608. To be honest with you, I've never heard of BK (I guess that says a lot!) but have just done a quick search on the usual comparison website here, and it brings back no hits, which makes me think I'm going to struggle to find them. Will look into it further now though.

Cheers for the heads up.

(changing the FX for the BR2s)

I'd substitute the FX for the BR1 not the BR2, that's what I did, a very good pair of speakers, plus it saves you around £100 for other equipment.
