Ok, time for a little bit of fun! I have spent the last month or so researching LCD and Plasma TV's, i feel i know everything i need to know, and have managed to reduce the list of possible choices down to three. I have a budget of around £800, although this is my top end. I would say that i would be using it mainly to watch SD from a sky plus box, but it would also be used a lot for gaming. I am after a TV with a good picture quality and that can handle motion very well. I would like the sound to be acceptable, although i do plan to purchase a sound bar in the future. So now to the race;

In Lane 1: Panasonic TH42PZ80 (Best price £769)

In Lane 2: Samsung LE40A656 (Best price £739)

In Lane 3: LG 42LG6000 (Best price £699)

So, which TV is the Usain Bolt of the TV world? Which would get Gold, Silver and Bronze? I open this to you......

In a straightforward foot-race, the Panasonic is the, er, fastest.

That's always presuming you've seen them all the same price, of course. Unless it's heavily discounted, you can overlook the LG. Same goes for the Samsung, unless you're bowled over by its alluring reddish finish.

Don't forget Sony's KDL-W4000, either. Even M&S have it for under a grand...

Don't forget to take into account costs associated with buying a Blu Ray player, sound system and decent cables. It all adds up.ÿ

Oh and Simon, why so down on the Samsung? ÿWhat HiFi gave it a decent review

Thanks Simon for the quick post.

Streetspirit....thanks for the post. I have PS3, so blu ray is sorted. I will purchase a sound system in a few months when i have a little bit more cash, but i have taken that into account, hence the £800 budget. ALthough, it did cross my mind, that maybe if i expanded the budget a little bit i could get a TV with a really good sound system, that would not require an additional system. But at the minute im going with the thought, resonable price TV and seperate sound system. I forgot what they're called but im thinking one of those single bar speakers that offer simulated surround sound. Hope you know what i mean.

If I was a betting man, my money would be on that

I've been thinking about one myself so have been keeping an eye on prices. Richer Sounds are about £729, and Dixons are about £748 inc. delivery. There's talk of them having a 5 year warranty from Panasonic at the mo too, but I haven't looked into it properly yet.

I'm trying to find the cheapest one in store somewhere though, so I can price match at John Lewis.

I'm not down on the Samsung - I quite like the finish and it gives good picture (as they say). The Panasonic's the better product, though.

Yes, I've also heard about the 5 year warranty from Panasonic, but can't find any definite information about it?
