AMP or Home cinema in a box your thoughts?

Do you mean using a HTIB instead of seperates?

I've had 3 HTIB's before I got an Onk 607 and Kef speakers. I always thought that HTIB were good untill I got my admittedly budget set up above, however the difference is night and day.

Some of the reviews on WHF and other sites say there are some good HTIB but these are always up towards budget seperate costs.

My advice, if you can stretch to seperates then you won't be disappointed.

would you still acheive good quality sound without using an amp from your tv (sky virgin ps3)

It's not clear what your actually asking! Since you appear to be asking 2 different questions ie thought's on amp/hciab?and sound quality from tv speakers?

So which is it?

This is one of common asked questions we get ourselves to be honest but to black and white down the line, a seperate amp and speaker package is a far better sound than a all in one box home cinema, a seperate amp has much more decoding capability, sound quality and more connectivity. In defence of a one box home cinema pack, they are good, there's some good kits out there such as the Panasonic SC-BT200 or SC-BT205 but you have to understand that one box kits are built on price, they are more attractive as price point than a seperate amp and speaker kit as this option would cost a lot more.

So the choice lies in your hands, if you have a good budget to spend, i would steer away from the one box kits and go seperates. But if you have a certain budget, then a one box could be a good investment but not in the long run as you might find things always changing in this industry.

Could you be any less specific?

What are you actually asking? Will a HCIAB give decent sound quality for Sky? Yes, better than the TV on it's own, better than a seperate Amp and proper speakers? Probably not.

The biggest problem I have with HCIAB is that quite often they only have one additional input, so if you have Sky and a PS3 for example you end up having to swap cables all the time, just too much hassle.

If you have such a system you don't need an amp, nor indeed can you connect such a system to an external amplifier. But whichever approach you take, you will need the speakers - be it two, three, five, six, seven or eight - or you won't hear any sound at all.

tvspecv:

if you use a 5.1 system like the Panasonic SC-BT205 (home cinema in a box) without an amp an 5 speakers

will you achieve the same quality sound as when connecting an amp an 5 speakers its not rocket science!!!

Not rocket science, no. But your wording was a bit ambiguous

I had a Sony HCIAB for years, with 5 little speakers, a passive sub, in built amp and DVD and even a radio. It was a great little bit of kit and much better than the TV speakers for movies and TV sound itself.

However. When I had the money and I bought a Blu-ray player, an A/V amp and a surround speaker package all seperately, (yep, you even have to buy the speaker cables seperately). The performance improved dramatically (as you would hope for the additional outlay). I'm not knocking the Sony HCIAB (I gave it to my parents and they think it's the bee's knees). But it's a lifestyle product designed down to a price.

It's all down to how important quality sound is to you and how deep your pockets are. If you just want a bit more involvement when you watch the occasional film, you're probably not up for spending loads. However, if you're an ardent film fan, then you'll probably see a benefit in a greater outlay. Likewise. If you're looking at spending £300/400, there's no real point in looking at seperates. By the HCIAB and know you've got a great product for your cash.

tvspecv:so even if you got a system like the Pioneer LX01 you still think you should invest in an amp?The LX01 is a HCIAB and has it's own amplification built in. You can't add an amp to it!!!

Unless of course you're asking if seperates will perform better than it?
