Amendment to whathifi.com house rules

Whilst I think it is a very good idea as it would be terrible if the forums became overrun with business owners constantly soliciting trade. In all fairness, with one or two noticeable & questionable examples the business owners (the two in particular who are often in the forums without naming names) have shown restraint while also offering up thoughtful and detailed help. Perhaps unfortunately, everywhere is subject to influence as even WHF has noticeable gaps in the brands they review perhaps because they once upon a time gave a less than glowing review and now the brands have decided its not worth the risk.. I am glad WHF care enough to monitor the situation as it would be awful if the soliciting dominated the forums. I personally don't mind the business owners however so long as it doesn't become overwhelming and they are blatantly upfront about who they are

FrankHarveyHiFi:Is there a time limit for these changes?

And is my signature ok? Or should it read 'retailer' rather than the company name?

No, but we would hope any retailers, distributors, manufacturers, etc. will comply with the new rules as soon as possible. We'll be watching.

And yes, your signature is fine.

That's exactly the intention of the new rules.

Indeed. And it's worth re-iterating that manufacturers and retailers often offer excellent advice/info on these Forums, and we have no desire to curb such beneficial insights, in the appropriate context.

Any plans on changing the rules on users posting equipment for sale or adding a classifieds section?

I was selling my amp recently and i know there is a user who had been trying for find one exactly like that but I couldn't alert him or point him to an auction or classifieds site as that would have been against the house rules. Also I have seen users post their used equipment elsewhere which I had wished I had seen earlier. Any help here would be beneficial for all forum members. I know maintaining a full classifieds website would be expensive but maybe a separate category where people can post alerts, etc

If you ask AE nicely I'm sure he or any of the other pros here will pass something on through private mailing ... but you probably have to ask very nicely.

JohnDuncan:Always happy to do that, yes.

Top service. Send me hobnobs please.

Transparent retailers are always welcome IMHO because of the sheer volume of products they have heard, and it gives another point of view to the What Hifi reviews too......

So what am I going to do with my 156 spare sock-puppet and 'sleeper' userids now?

Virtually 'everyone' on these forums are my secret alter-egos that I have spent years developing 'personalities' for.

It is no mean task I can tell you, controlling all these computers remotely, setting them all up with seemingly genuine accounts with IPs that can be traced back to different towns, counties (and countries) and different ISPs to maintain the semblance of authenticity.

Joel alone took me months. (I still haven't got him quite right yet.)

I even have to hire an out of work actor to infiltrate the very heart of Haymarket's IT dept! (Okay he is cheap but it all adds up.)

Did you hear a noise? Nurse!

I would like to see the same. Could there be a section to the forum 'For sale', where an item is noted as for sale and you can find it on ebay or whatever. No selling actually takes place on the forum. It is just a means of letting other forum members know that an item is up for sale elsewhere.

Not too sure the objective - if you're not directly selling, who would benefit?

Because most things are so accessible these days, you can pretty much track down the exact item within a few minutes. If an idiot like me can do it, then most should.

Couldn't agree more, the more experts the better as long as it's not a blatant sales tool. Having said that those who do use the forums as a blatant sales tool don't do themselves any favours anyway as it's a bit see-through.

Hey, we can be open about this - and thanks for the compliment

We're members of many forums. There's one that's just overrun by a particular dealer, and the regulars on that forum are such good chums that you feel like a outcast, and like you shouldn't join in. So I know first hand what it's like to see a forum that's technically a sales website for a dealer. That's the last thing anyone wants. Things can get a little friendly round here (maybe a little too much for newcomers), but this other forum is just extreme.

When solicitation for business is out on the open on forums like this, it is, as already mentioned, blatantly obvious, and does that retailer no good. People pick up on this very easily.

I would like to point out, if I may, that I think this may have partly come about because of some points that I raised recently, which I thought needed to be addressed.

Well, that and certain members linking to the relevant page of their online retail store every time they mentioned a product...

I just thought it'd help people to view product details, photos etc - saves people searching
