i have just been browsing computer audiophile's website, and found this: http://www.amarraaudio.com/

it's software that piggy-backs itunes, so you only use itunes for searching/playlists etc. and the amarra software plays the file.

it isn't available yet, but the claims made by the maker and comp.audiophile's head-honcho, are very interesting.

i thought bit perfect meant bit perfect, but apparently not!

not sure what i think of the computeraudiophile website though, parts of it made my head spin. russ andrews make a usb cable!

Hmmm, though it still uses iTunes to actually play any compressed files, and only routes PCM files (such as WAV) through it's playback engine... so if you use any form of compressed files (whether lossless or lossy) then I can't see it being much use...
