Active speakers

Andrew Everard:Having reviewed the AVIs for Gramophone, I'd say they're an interesting alternative to the conventional amplifier/passive speaker combination, but they have their limitations and IMO would really have to be used with a subwoofer to handle much of the music I enjoy.

I'll back up Chebby's comments here as I thought the review in Gramophone was excellent as well. Plenty of detail in those two and a bit pages. Cracking review.

chebby:Would you say the ADM9.1s lack bass, even when compared to compact two-way standmounts of similar size? (Or even smaller ones like my N-Sats?)

Yes.

Thank you for kind words: of course, it's much easier to write a review with the luxury of a couple of pages to play with, rather than a few hundred words, but I do find listening and writing for the Gramophone reviews hugely enjoyable.

Coming soon: Arcam Solo Neo, and (everything crossed) Naim UnitiQute...

JohnDuncan:Whereas IMO they didn't (on balance). Though I think it would depend very much on the room.

"On balance"? Wonder if you mean "the AVIs are better but not by enough to justify the price"...? I'm not saying that is or isnt the case, just wondered about the use of that phrase.

The AVIs are cleaner and more organised and most of the traditional hifi qualities are 'better', but the extra bass of the Aktimates made them more (waggles fingers) "musical" and that, together with their price, made them a more attractive prospect to me. Like Andrew, I thought a sub would be essential with the 9.1s, and adding one would no doubt make them a serious alternative, but without - and in that room, which no doubt plays a part - I couldn't buy them.

Thanks, am leaning towards the Aktimates as I'm hoping for a fuller (more fun?) sound. Continue to read that the main issue with the AVIs is the lack of bass and as the Aktimates are less than 3 times the price, I think the decision is made.

Andrew Everard:Less than a third of the price, surely? If you're talking about the Minis, that is...

Was including the AVI sub.

No, the Gramophone reviews aren't available online until some time after publication. We're old-fashioned enough to quite like the idea of people buying the magazine!

But it's in the current issue, which is still in the shops.

Ah right: was just clarifying the mistaken impression you may have given with your

Ah. Thanks Andrew.

That could be a crimp in that particular idea then, as I have no intention of buying an £800 subwoofer.

I am not a bass 'nut' by any means (and I prefer small two-way speakers), but there are limits.

Now looking forward to that Gramophone UnitiQute review. (Could you briefly mention it's quality with spoken word or radio drama if you are the reviewer? I am sure that's not entirely inconsistent with Gramophone reader's tastes.)

I have the Neutron and bass is sufficient.

I couldn't imagine the larger AVI speakers to be lacking.

The Epoz Maxi is a similar size to the ADM9 but with a passive crossover, rear port, and 60w amplifier, so maybe it just lacks control?

If/when I get one, I will do my best. AFAIK final tuning still underway in Salisbury...

Almost certainly, and is all the more enjoyable for it...
