Due to a somewhat unusual living arrangement at present my CD player is unused in one room (no space for it in living room) and my amp is hooked up to the TV and BDP in the living room but the speakers are rather awkwardly squeezed in (it's my gf's flat). I rarely get to listen to my CDs because the TV is usually on.

Because of this I've recently been thinking about selling my speakers, amp and CD player (much as I love them) and seeing what else i can do so that a) the TV sound is improved over its built in speakers and b) I can listen to my CDs with good quality.

The answer seems to be a pair of powered speakers for the TV and a pair of headphones for myself. Anybody got any suggestions for me to check out? I've also considered a Brennan JB7 or an Ipod.

Thanks folks.

Avi 9.1's offer great sound and imaging for the money and if you need the sub a fantastic 2.1 setup. I love using my iPod touch via either my Grado sr 60's or my Shure se 110's.

An ipod or the Brennan as the source of a headphone setup is a super start. What is your budget and what kind of music do you listen to?

AVI 9.1s are a bit too expensive, however I have been looking at the Neutron 5 2.1 system for the TV. I could buy the speakers to run with my existing amp and then later on by the AVI sub.

My music is becoming more diverse to include jazz and piano as well as rock and indie.

As indicated above budget is at the minute around a few hundred pounds, but i'm not going to be rushing out to buy things. I'm going to take my time, research, save, and get something that meets my needs and will give years of use.

I suspect my CDP is going on the 'bay this evening, although interestingly when I suggested to the gf that i was going to sell the speakers (partly because I thought she was just tolerating them in her flat) she said "Aww, I like them here..."! So I might try and get her on board with a different set-up.
