Hi, I have just inherited a Marantz pm35 mk2. It's rated at 45w per channel at 8ohm (55w at 4ohm) and thought I'd give it a run through my Zensor 5 speakers in case it's better than my similar period Denon 720. However the speakers are rated at 6ohm impedance. Is it 'safe' to run the Marantz with the Zensors? Is the amp underpowered for them (room size is 4mx3m).

Zensors are quite easy to drive and 45W per channel should be plenty.

In the room of that size I doubt you'll be able to run past 12 o'clock on the dial before it gets way too loud.

The power's fine. You'll have enough watts to hit over 100dbs, which is VERY LOUD for listening at home.

You may, at some point wish to try some other speakers. There's a very high chance you'd be able to find something you'll prefer to the Zensor 5's.

Just check one thing. If you can download your amps manual online. I have an older marantz amp the pm4200. On the back the speaker sign say 4-16 ohms. My amp kept cutting out and I relegated it to the attic years ago. A few weeks back I found an internet piece saying this amp had to use speakers 8-16 ohms or to much current flows and it can activate the thermal cut out. I downloaded the manual and it does indeed say this. My speakers were 6 ohms, I have bought 8 ohm replacement since and have no issue. The pm4200 wasn't the only marantz that needed 8-16 ohms, your one may not be

Thanks for all your responses and advice! I gave the amp a whirl and it was okay but a little bit too treble orientated for me. Anyway, it was only really to test out having inherited it from someone - I prefer having a bit more ooph to my amps just so I know I have some additional power in reserve.

Thanks once again!

45 watt is enought, running 6 ohm 86 db speakers with 2x20/30 watt in 6 ohm (nad amp) and they do get loud

No you can't, since output from a cd player is very loud meaning 9 O'clock it's loud, 10 O'clock you might reach max power and distortion at 11 O'clock, only with a turntable you might be able to go past 12 O'clock before theres distortion.
