Not that I've heard of. Though all surround sound could be labelled three dimensional sound, so it wouldn't surprise me if some marketing departments use that terminology to sell to the less educated buyer!

Closest so far would be Dolby ProLogic IIz, where you can add (if you have a 9.1 amp like Pioneer 2020, LX 53/83) front height speakers, so that you get sound from above. The IIz duplicates ambient sound (like rain etc) from the front left/right (i believe) to give you a more immersive sound, as there is the sense that the sound is actually coming from above too (very immersive).

However, on good blu-rays you'll get Dolby True HD, or DTS-HD Master, and I'm not sure if plumping for the DPLIIz option on the amp only gives you standard definition sound throughout. Having installed front heights and experimented with the above, my inclination is to stick with the HD formats rather than IIz. Or is it my imagination? Anyone?

Wow, yeah, there wouldn't be much wall space left after 62 speakers! Can't imagine trying to install and calibrate that lot! Interesting though, clearly what their aiming for is complete immersion with, and realism from, the source material. I'm all for that!

I thought the white sphere thing (I wonder if it's supposed to look like one of those Jedi training drones...? Geek, moi?) was the 62 speaker device?

Not sure where you'd put it in a home-cinema environment though...

I'm reminded of a spherical hi-fi in another sci-fi movie, but can't remember which one - The Man Who Fell to Earth????
