Is it possible to use my neat motives 2's on the,e.g. nait 5i amp and a home cinema integrated amplifier at the same time because i want to play my neat motives through my home cinema amplifier but at the same time because my home cinema amp isn't good enough for the naim cd5i. So im gonna buy the nait 5i for that. but ive only got one pair of neat motives. so if some how i could play the speakers through the nait 5i and home cinema amp at the same time that would be good to know and how i could do it?

[/quote] This has been touched upon many times and I once badgered Andrew and the crew with my set up. Yes, you can. I say this assuming that the 5i amp can separate it's pre and power duties (my previous amp, Creek Evo could not do this). You would then need a receiver which has pre outs for the front left and right speakers. All you do is connect the two amps with stereo cables and then calibrate the 5.1 system with your 5i at a set volume. It is definitely the easiest way of sharing the speakers and you don't lose anything in sound. When you play cd's through your stereo amp, you don't need your receiver on. And when you watch movies, you just turn your stereo amp on and select the input you have linked to your receiver.

ok Gerrard thank you very much this has taken a whole lot of weight off of my shoulders, but now im thinking of just waiting for the new denon and Yamaha amplifiers to come out and see whether they can with the naim cd5i lol, it wont as well as the nait5i but at the cost of an extra 750 for the nait i think i can handle the little less sound quality difference between them both.

Rotue the pre outs on the home cinema amp through to the Nait, and leave the volume at 12 o'clock when watching a film - the Nait will effectively then be an external power amp. Connect music sources directly to the Nait, and DVD players etc to the AV thing.
Personally I'd just sell all the AV rubbish and put the cash into stereo upgrades. I did that and never looks back.

It won't be a little less quality though!! You can get my receiver for around £250-£300 and it would do the job fine with the 5i. Other models that have pre outs are the Cambridge Audio 540 and 340 - both under £300 and probably more geared to stereo sound. The Denons 1908 upwards and they will be cheaper soon as the new models are unveiled. If you are more interested in the sound, I would go this route for sure. While I was waiting for my new amp to come, I tried my receiver with my cd player and it was so so much worse than with stereo amp.

OK, here's an alternative - get a Marantz PM7001 for 350 quid, which is not a Nait 5i, but is a very good stereo amplifier, and team it with a Cambridge 340R for 200 quid. £550 all in, and you have great music and movies.

If that's just too steep, grab a s/h Yamaha DSP-E800 off eBay for 50 quid, and add it to any stereo amp of your choosing for instant surround.

ok thanks john for the advice, one more thing though...how about the Onkyo TX-SR705E (TXSR705E) Home Cinema Amplifier would that be a good source for the naim cd5i player at the same time being a good home cinema amplifier as well?

If you were only going to use the 705, I wouldn't bother buying the CD5i. Something like the Marantz CD6002 would be more than adequate.

If you want to use the CD5i/Nait5i with the Onkyo, it can be done - the Nait 5i has a programmable unity gain input you can use to route the front channel preouts from the Onkyo, and avoid all that fiddling with two volume controls.

But if you take this route, please connect the CD5i directly to the Nait5i, not to the Onkyo.

how much could i get the naim cd5i, nait 5i and neat acoustics motives 2 speakers for in 2 years time, or even now? OK new question what should i get with the naim cd5i with a budget of £600 on pair of floorstanders and £400-£500 on amp? which would total abouts £1800-£1950.

naim is holmes:

Ok then, it basically said in the subject name what i need advice on. I love the naim cd5i cd player and i would like all of your advice on what speakers to go with them; i already have an amplifier for it not brilliant not even specific to hi-fi as its a Yamaha integrated home cinema amp...BUT either way i love the naim cd5i. ok fine i have a £1500-£2200 budget on a cd player and pair of speakers and if i have enough maybe even have some left over for some other treats. But i would LIKE... to get my hands on the naim cd5i and play around with it some how...so...advice, advice please people/person. Another thing i will mention, big thing really... its aimed to be bought in 2years time as i get the big $$$ then, so even if someone out there can tell me what the cd5i's price will be in 2 years time ill be happy as well. And im only 18 so not lots of experience when it comes to this thing, so no "flaming" me please.

are you not jumping the gun a bit, all this talk of new kit and your not gonna be buying it for 2 years. Prices, ranges, technologies could change massively in 2 years as could your needs. You dont mention room size, how important surround sound is to you.

Have you even listened to the naim cd5i

If you bought the cambridge audio 540r surround receiver for £300 this will also give you pretty good stereo sound and you could then add a stereo amp such as the nait when you could afford it utilising the pre outs on the cambridge audio.

but this could all be very irrelevant if your not buying anything for 2 years

You could get the Pioneer PD-D6-J (I think it's called). It's a superb "budget" stereo amp but what has been mentioned in many reviews is that unlike some of the budget amps around, it can work well with much more expensive equipment. You can get them for around £350. That's where my money would go. As for speakers, you could get some very nice ones for around the £750 mark. You need to demo some and it would obviously depend on if you want floorstanders or not and other criteria.
