Hello everyone, I have been offered a couple different speakers to go with my sonos zp100 for £100.

1. Acoustic Energy Evo 1 £100

2. Kef C1 £100

Any opinions on these before I go and demo them, I am going to try some other speakers but these have been discounted.

Thanks.

I am planning and going and having a look at those, aswell as the MA br1 speaker although they are more expensive. I would be interested if people have listened to or had any opiniions on the £100 speakers though, thanks.

Dont go with the Kef C1's try the Wharfedale 9.1, Cambridge Audio S30, Tannoy F1 or the Mordaunt-Short 902i

The Evo 1's I had not less than 3 months ago, they are superbly detailed in the midrange but definitely lack bass depth which means they are ideally suited for slower softer music but are a no go area for rock and rap music. For that matter, the wharfedales and the Tannoy'1 also lack in bass but these do perform better than the Tannoy's. I have not heard the Kef ones you are mentioning and neither have I heard the Mordaunt Short's but judging from what people have been recommending in terms of livelier music, you might want to demo those to.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I was looking at some of the mordaunt short alumni 2 speakers the ones that are gloss black with silver fronts, they curve round at the back, does anyone know if they would be of similar quality to the 902i's as suggested as they look alot better. Keep the suggestions coming as I am going to try a few different options before I buy them.

I think there are some highly respected Roth Audio speakers at £99 (or were) - check the reviews section of this site for the rating.

Those roths look perfect for the job, I have got to place them on a cabinet close to a wall so they would be great, plus they are nice and small and look good, I think I may well go for those. thanks great suggestion.

The Alumni speakers are very good but no where near as good as the 902i's they are more for surround sound systems they have no real bass to them at all where as the 902i's are for Hi-Fi and have amazing detail and good bass.

yes the looks of the speakers are important in as they are not for my main system. Most of the speakers suggested would do the job as said, but I just wanted to make sure non of them sound really bad and a big step below the others. I think I am going to go for the roth audios as suggested, it will save a lot of auditioning for what are only £100 speakers. Would be different if I was going to replace my main speakers.

I personally would get a nice pair of quality speakers from eBay or any of the online 2nd-hand hifi dealers for £70-100. This way you get improved sound quality that will grow as your system does, better build (very important in a speaker) and some brand snobbery if you like :)

I bought a set of B&W DM600 s3's from "Cash convertors" (don't ask!) for £60, still in B&W warranty. I'm very impressed with them and am fairly confident they'd out perform any £100 Tannoy/Warfedale/Kef's (expecting someone to disagree of course!).

Coincidentally, I recemtly sold two sets of Ruark Epilogue speakers on ebay, a pair of early black ones for about £60 and some newer Cherry examples for about £125. These are really nice little monitors, hand made in Southend-on-sea. They are compact, sweet sounding and regularly come up on "the bay" for peanuts.

I have been looking on ebay but nothing as yet has jumped out at me. There are a lot of B&W speakers on there but most of them are alittle bit to big for what I was looking for, I would love a pair of cm1's though so I will keep looking. Thats if I don't get too impatient and just get the roth audios as suggested. Thanks for the suggestions.
