Many thanks for your reply. Just to clarify for me, is a phono preamplifier the same as a phono stage?

I am trying to link my very old Aiwa record player to our newish Cambridge CXA60 amplifier. The Aiwa manual tells me to simply plug in the red and white pin connectors to an amp and connect the ground connector. This doesn’t work. Do I need a preamp between the deck and my Cambridge amp? Many thanks
