    ok it turns out it is just a faulty power switch - no big deal. Thanks for the various suggestions

    The amp is a Sony TA - 1150 , the buzz comes from the speakers and is temporary for around 20/30 seconds. It is a constant sound for this duration only. After 20/30 seconds it suddenly stops and the amp performs without any flaw whatsoever.

    there is not a separate power switch to the amp in the midi system - just an on/off for the thing as a whole

    ok, thanks, but I just want to understand the dual amp situation, meaning: the CD player only has a phone output - I would want to use the Sony amp so how do I deal with the midi system one?

    I have a CD player from a midi system that I now want to use in conjunction with an old, 1976, Sony amp. Can I simply add via the Tuner or Tape input?
