not sure where you are based but note that the UK/European version of the 9010 doesn't have a DAC (though the US one does I think). If you need a DAC you could look at the yamaha AS501 which can be had for about 200 (richer sounds) , or else spend a bit more on onkyo 9050, Marantz pm6005 etc.

False analogy. Those features of a speaker directly affect the sound waves you hear in a way that most features of a cd player beyond the DAC don't.

Re bass... It all depends what you are looking for. My wharfedale Vista 100 soundbar was cheap and sounds decent, but I sometimes wish I could turn down the bass a bit further than the controls allow... But then i'm not interested in annoying the neighbours or waking the kids with earth -...

Just seen that richer sounds have the yamaha s501 for £199 which seems a very good deal, that was over 300 when I was looking 6 months ago, and has DAC and phono input. (and was well liked by several forum members if I remember correctly)

The European version of the Onkyo 9010 doesn't have a DAC (though I believe that the US one does). In the UK you'd have to go up to the 9050 for that (which is probably similar in price to the Marantz)

In the end i was constrained by the size (depth) of the shelf the amplifier is supposed to live on - i didn't realise how big some of these amps are. Not sure what the point of the 9010 is when the 9030 is around 30 quid cheaper... i just got the 9030 and like it (not exactly an expert though).

I was looking at the RXV377, -477, -677 models. A review for one of them mentioned this limitation, it could well have been the lowest model, and i may have mistakenly assumed that it appled to the whole range, but it's not something you can tell just by looking at specs.
