As a NAD M51 owner and use the DAC as preamp, I would recommend NAD D1050. Their digital volume control is very decent. Edited..my bad the volume control on d1050 can only used with headphone. So it may not be able to act as a preamp.

Some people claim an usb power purifier have greater effect on SQ by reduce the noise between the computer and DAC.

I think a lot of the time the problem with airplay is because of the stability of WIFI connection. Thus, I stayed wired too.

Btw many streamer already built in DAC, so you may not need another standalone DAC.

I will take the convience of playing digital file library any given day. I can play hundreds or thousands albums without get out of my sofa as compare to changing CDs with CDP. Even that means I will sacrifice SQ a little. However, I do like the SQ from my computer+DAC.

Audirvana is a must, the improvement on the SQ is obvious.

DM 2/6 is a smooth sounding speaker, so I am not sure about if you can get more attack with DM 2/6. Base on the spec given by the two manufactures, DM 2/6 does have a bit more of bass response 50Hz vs 57Hz +/- 3dB. If you trust those numbers, maybe you can count on getting a bit more bass.
