How high does your hearing go?

Yes, but when trying to sell you high resolution products that's note the aspect they push when they show the lumpy squared off wave that 44.1 kHz gives you while the higher rates give you a much smoother and more analogue wave (but didn't some manufacturers get pulled up on that and had to stop...

How high does your hearing go?

you do know that's the sampling rate rather than how high a frequency is reproduced while I don't think there's much to high resolution and that it's pretty much bunk, this is a common misconception. Yes, it allows frequencies beyond human hearing to be reproduced, but the theoretical argument...

    ............

I broadly agree with most of it. What has this got to do with the article or even audio? Dont like Apple, don't buy it. Apply products can be restrictive in that they force you to do it Apple's way. sure you could mess around with adapters, but it would be easiest to stream via AirPlay using...

so much speaker and amp power for small rooms?

On most amps halfway would probably be full power and may already be clipping depending on the source and the volume of the recording.

    Airport Express Alternatives?

There's also the previous generation of Apple TV which has an optical output, unlike the current one that only has HDMI.

    Spdif purifier IFiAudio

This alone rings alarm bells "And the music sounded louder, more dynamic—almost startlingly so, as if I'd cranked up my preamp's volume control. Could boosting the digital signal to 5V have such an effect?"

What is good hi fi for you

i think the first step is changing one's mindset and acknowledging that hi if stands for high fiber rather than high fidelity.

Remove brightness and increase bass at low volumes?

How low is low volume? At low enough volumes it could be due to your (everyone's) ears rather than the speakers. because of how we perceive sound, at lower volumes most stereos sound thinner as our perception of bass drops off. A loudness function, or even using tone controls is an easy way to...

    Pure Direct option

I've always been able to hear a difference on every amp I've tested it on. Never tried it on an Accuphase. Maybe I'll give it a go when I'm next in a dealer that carries Accuphase, although I've kind of stopped just going and listening to kit when I'm not looking to upgrade; helps reduce temptation.

    Upgrading - speakers or crossovers?

Isn't the classic DIY fix for a bright tweeter putting a tissue or some other absorptive material in front of the tweeter :)

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

As an atheist Jew (educated at a C of E school and had a Shinto wedding ceremony) I'd like to wish you and the rest of the forum a merry Christmas.

    A little story

Are you using big B&W speakers? they tend to have tricky impedence drops and benefit from amplification that can handle that. Based on no real logic I've always favored the amp first approach, although switching to active monitors has removed the whole matching the amp to the speakers issue...

    Headphones v speakers

I prefer speakers but use headphones to block out noise, or out of consideration for my neighbors when it's early/late, or so that I don't wake the kids.

Proac speakers ignored by What Hi Fi ?

Seeing as WHF pretty relies on manufacturers submitting products for review, perhaps it's the other way around. Proac have been ignoring WHF.

    Overkill

LOL, the disproportionate amount spent on cables, etc. never even registered. Definitely overkill when you consider the speaker upgrade you could've gotten and the minimal/zero difference the cables and plugs make. Another overkill scenario might be the size of speakers one uses compared to the...
