    Using CD Ripping Services

    1. These services will keep a store of all the discs ripped, so chance is that 99% of your discs won't be touched - they'll just match to the previous rip and include a copy of that. Fine if they physically match the disc, not too good if matched on title and you get a copy of a different...

TV vs projector - which one to go for?

Not sure on your kids situation, but can't one of the bedrooms be a cinema? Only 2 of us so I requisitioned the biggest bedroom (4mx5m into bay) and have it set up firing across the room (42" plasma and 92" pj screen)...

Can anyone recommend a 45in to 47in matt (or un mirror like) LED/LCD TV?

Does sound a bit harsh against JL - they've taken back a fully working item because of your personal preference and offered an exchange. They've got to make money somehow - you can't have shiny stores, great staff and service and still expect web level pricing ...

Does KEF LS50 trim ring rotate - use as centre channel

Your cinema room should be dark enough that you can't see it anyways  Not tried on min - the LS50s feel bloody solid and surely something moveable that close to the driver would be a prime candidate for vibration?

    Time for a change

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably try the new speaker route first and look at somthing like the Naim SuperUniti going forward. How do they deal with big libraries (ease of navigation, speed etc) - that's one of the reasons i've stayed with the PC source.

    Time for a change

I've currently got a Pioneer LX75 feeding a Quad Lite set for movies and music. Music and films are fed over HDMI from XBMC (Windows), all my music is ripped as FLAC files on a fileserver (wired network). Looking to get something a little more music focussed (without losing the movies) - i've...

Best Free Flac Player for my Netbook

Foobar 2000 is the standard answer, lots of plugins available if you fancy tweaking it too. It's also pretty lightweight so runs well on a netbook. One other alternative that springs to mind is XBMC - it will add them to a nice library with covers, band photos etc.

Hi-res files to DVD and playback

Late reply, but ... The 48/16 issues with the sony via toslink is a result of DRM restrictions - part of the agreement on bluray was to limit audio output to 48/16 on non-encrypted liinks (ie toslink), so the Sony i playing at 96/24 but downsampling to 48/16 for the toslink due to this. If you...

    Ripping DVDS

MakeMKV will rip DVDs straight into MKV files (handles multi episode TV discs too). The DVD version is free, the Bluray key is €50 or so. Great software - will rip as fast as your DVD drive will throw data at it. Note that many PC DVD drives are speed-limited for video (google riplock) ...

    Blu-Ray player with 25p or 50p output?

If your player has 1080i as an option, try that. It should output the 24p by inserting the pulldown flags in the 60i stream and the TV will have best chance of reconstructing to 24p (even if it won't take a 24p input directly) ... these things were sold in the US where this is the normal state...

Do homeplugs increase speed relative to wireless? or strength of signal or is this the same thing?

... or get a better quality router (Cisco E4200 / Netgear N600 or N900) etc. I also have a WiFI bridge (AGN bands) that works better than the inbuilt wifi that's on most devices, comes with four ethernet ports on the back. Mine is Buffalo, but Netgear, Dlink and others make similar.

Streaming Blu Ray around the house

Yup, you can stream BR level content. But you'll need to be careful ... 1. Use wired ethernet if at all possible - gigabit will give multiple streams, but 100mbps will do nicely for one room / tv at a time 2. Bluray over wifi is possible (despite what you often read), but you'll need decent...

The Reader (UK) Blu-Ray not 1080p/24?

So they see nothing wrong in speeding the films up to 25 frames per second? Nothing wrong in a (progressive) film being encoded as interlaced? This reply stints of 'shut up little person, you don't know what you're on about' I've just got the reader through on rental - yes it's 50i, 5 minutes...
