Well, that experiment failed. I had concluded the even the TDLs on small stands simply didn't work in the room. This was doubly confirmed when my wife got home. I have settled on a mediocre surround set up with satellite speakers in the main room, and the stereo set up in the small spare room...

The Elacs look interesting but I cannot find anywhere that sells them. Regarding size, I am purely guessing as SWMBO is the ultimate judge. I will try both my sets of speakers and gauge size from the response.

Thanks for the comments guys. The Neats were rejected due to their width. Can they be used vertically? You are possibly correct on the PMCs. They just came in under the 300mm cut off and may still be rejected. The set up will be going in a tight corner. Not ideal, and not how I'd do it but...

Shortlist update:- The following have been rejected from the shortlist due to not being of significant a reduction in size, regardless of performance. Kef LS50, ATC SCM 7, Sonus Faber Chameleon B, Dali Mentor Menuet, Dali Ikon 1 MK2, Harbeth P3 ESR, PMC Twenty 21, Spendor D1, Amphion Argon 1a...

Thanks for building the shortlist guys! Interest thought, if I go active then I could sell on my current amp and speakers making the new purchase eminantely affordable. That is how I am supposed to think, right? *diablo*

Buying second hand means no auditioning. Trying gear out in shops and buying elsewhere is bad form IMHO.

The Harbeth reviews are interesting, and the Neats meet my spec. Still going to try the current set up first. Good to be building the shortlist though. I have authorised dealers for those 2 and others in easy reach.

A nice list! Although, to be fair, the only ones with a meaningful reduction in size are the Neats. A starting point should it go wrong with the current set up. Out of curiosity, remove price constraints as I imagine small high end is a niche product.

A demo goes without saying. I am looking at potential shortlists.

I have my doubts. The reason she hates subs is that she is succeptable to noise and "feels" the bass vibrations. Anything going through the walls sounds like a bass box. But I accept that I could be wrong.

Thanks for the replies. For info - Current set up is a variety of A/V inputs but really the set up is for Hi-Res digital files into a Beresford DAC, Roksan K2 amp and the K2 speakers on Partington Dreadnought stands (filled). I would like for any future purchases to at least match that level...

This will have been done before so a link to old threads is more than acceptable but I couldn't find them. Due to a new layout in our house I need new, smaller, wife-friendly speakers. For reference, my Roksan Kandy speakers on Partington stands are too big. Realistically I am looking at the...

Help with buying a suitable DAC

I currently use a Beresford Caiman between a Macbook Pro and Roksan Kandy amp & speakers which I am happy with. Fortunately/unfortunately, I started browsing hi-fi websites and succumed to buying a Caiman II which is supposed to be in a whole different league. It is considerably below your...

    USB or Mini-jack optical link?

I am going to disagree with most of you but that is allowed, right? I use a Macbook Pro connected to a Beresford Caiman DAC and the sound through USB is much more open than when using the optical out. Just my opinion though, no science.
