USB audio can never sound as good as CD

*music2* Not trying to start a flame war. Electronics are just a little close to my heart and I'm happy to help out anyone to a reasonable extent to get the best out of thiers. I would like to know the specs on his rig now its come up though. I'm expecting something special :), mines a run of...

USB audio can never sound as good as CD

CD at 1X is 153,600 bytes per second, or about 150KBp/s. Not to mention you forgot to do the conversions from bits to bytes and the to KB and MB. With your maths this would workout as follows: 16bits x 44100 = 705600. => Convert to Bytes [705600/8 = 88200] => Convert to KB [88200/1024 =...

Thank you. I should have been more exact it what I said, point taken. I will try harder in future.

USB audio can never sound as good as CD

Hi EllisDJ, Like MacOSX there is a setting to adjust the output Sample Rate and bit Depth. If you are having issues with poor quality sound from your PC or Laptop, I would be happy to make some sugestions which could improve your experience. It is important to use the sound drivers supplied by...

USB audio can never sound as good as CD

Cat5e uses 4 pairs of twisted pair wires (8 wires) this is done to cancel out induced magnetic interference. Using Cat5 does not ensure that error-correcting algorithms are used. You would need to check which protocol is used. IP is often used without TCP when streaming audio. Please note...

USB audio can never sound as good as CD

As a computer hardware developer I can categorically say, that the statement "USB audio can never sound as good as CD" is incorrect. CD Audio source is 2 Channel signed 16-bit Linear PCM. This means that the hardware in your CD player does not even need to cope with data rates exceeding 150KBps...

    Speakers for Audiolab M-PWR

Sorry, I forgot to mention that there is a noticable difference in the sound that the M-PWR produces when using XLR over RCA. Its also a bit louder, on XLR cables. I'm not a sell rep, I promise. I just got a little too carried away, trying to eek every little bit out of my M-DAC+.

KEF LS50, Monitor Audio Silver 8, Tannoy XT6F

Hi Q5, I tried the LS50s with a AudioLab M-PWR, for a nice little desktop setup. We also tried them on a Naim SuperNait 2 and a Arcam (can't remember the model). I'm not a bass junky, but when you are in a room full of speakers and have a few amps in front of you (and you really wanted the...

    Best connections

My personal perference is optical, as there is no electrical current passing between bit of equipment, thus eleiminating any earthing issues. Depending on your hardware, sometimes the coax's send/recieve data rates are higher than the optical's. But you would need to check your hardware specs...

A big one on cables... go wild but back up what you say.

Andyjm, in your case when you look for cables would I be right in saying that you look for the cheapest 10 gague you can find for speaker wire then, and simply the cheapest interconnects then?

A big one on cables... go wild but back up what you say.

My personal view is that interconnects are usually: 1. To short (less than 1.5m) 2. To smaller gauge (16 gauge, or smaller) To have a massive impact on sound quality, so I try to find interconnect that have been properly terminated, and shielded. I also avoid buying interconnects over one...

    Power amp for Audiolab 8200CDQ

Before you upgrade to the 8200MBs look around the internet for reviews. I use 8300MB (reviews are in short supply on these) and on my upgrade I noticed a much tighter and punckier bass. I guess thats the benifit of power reserves. I would opt for the 8300MB personally, but it might be alot of...

KEF LS50, Monitor Audio Silver 8, Tannoy XT6F

The Kef LS50 do not have a great range, so you can rule those out. Thier compact size simply does not permit them to have any bass. For all the rave reviews about top end, they are simply not well rounded enough to consider purchasing without purchasing a subwoofer to accompany them, as they...

    Speakers for Audiolab M-PWR

I used B&W CM6 S2 (Sensitivity 88db, 8ohmn nominal falling to 3.8ohmns) with the M-PWR and M-DAC+ for a while. For a small room it does have a bit of power, not deafening but you could get it reasonably loud without clipping. LS50 from Kef are much smaller and drive really well on the M-PWR but...

    Bluetooth connectivity for MDAC+

I use a QED uPlay plus over optical out to the M-DAC+ it works okay but I prefer the optical out on the MacBook (it's part of the headphone jack)
