What CD do you use as a reference?

This has the potential to be a useful and interesting thread...not sure I can be bothered sharing now...

Dark cloud on my Samsung LCD - what causes this?

I too am intrigued by this. I saw the same problem in the house of an aquaintance on a Sharp LCD TV. They thought they'd been cleaning their screen incorrectly, some sort of anti-static spray polish had been used. I'm not convinced by that or the thought that it may be a backlight issue. Any...

New (or used) amp for around £300

I too would recommend MF products, you get a lot of bang for your buck. I've had no other amps for twenty years or so having been a Radford man for many years before that. I've not heard the A3 but the 'family' sound is open and detailed, with great bass. I certainly wouldn't buy before a demo...

Film score composer John Barry dies

I have more of Barry's soundtracks than any other contemporary composer, at least a dozen. My wife and I were only watching 'Out of Africa' yesterday. A great composer.

    Amplifier warm up...

In my experience both amp and speakers and everything else need warming up to produce their best. I tend to switch on half an hour before listening...and in the days of lower fuel bills I kept the amps on at all times.

floor standing speakers that work well close to walls

Townshend Glastonburys - Mine are stuck right into the corners. Totally inert cabinet and front ported. Stunning. Occasionally available on ebay at modest prices. I paid full retail for mine in 1989 and wouldn't change 'em for the world.

Humax Foxsat HDR influence on new TV

I'm using the Foxsat HDR with the Sony 40W4500. Compared with the Sony's built-in Freeview tuner the reception quality is stunning, particularly on BBC channels. I've said this elsewhere a couple of times, but my wife cannot see any difference between BBC HD and SD. Perhaps it's a girl thing or...

    Clouding on TV set

Not a cloud in sight here;ª) Very happy 40W4500 owner.

    FREESAT

I agree. My wife can't see the difference between BBC SD & HD through the Humax Foxsat HDR. Not all channels are as good, but certainly much better than Freeview. I have no need for SKY and am happy to wait for Freesat to improve its HD offering; I've been waiting twenty or thirty years for HD...

    Freesat Cost

For me, the Humax Foxsat HDR/Installation suits my viewing preferences and patterns perfectly. The initial cost is considerable and I considered the Sky 'for-one-year' option but decided on the one off faff free method...how's that for alliteration! SD performance on FreeSat, particularly BBC...

    Installing Freesat HD

I have to disagree with JJ, my Foxsat-HDR provides an excellent SD picture, so good in fact that my wife has difficulty discerning the difference between BBC and BBC HD...she does need corrective lenses!ÿ That said, the Panasonic offering may well do what Panasonic do very well and provide a...

Latest Edition of What HiFi Recomending a Sony TV with known issues?

I ÿyawned...and I still am...so yes h4ardy, do say... I went on to give a point of view.ÿ And my 'yawn' is just as valid as your 'crusade'. I am very happy with the way this has been aired by WHF both here and in the magazine (read the first line of the review!) and consider their...

Latest Edition of What HiFi Recomending a Sony TV with known issues?

Y-A-W-N...the W4500's again! ÿWhen I ordered my set in January they were selling like hot cakes and I had to wait three weeks for John Lewis to deliver...it was their last batch. ÿI did the research and saw the picture produced in various stores. I chose to ignore the doomsayers who warned me...

    Bryston 3 or 4b v Musical Fidelity P270 v Chord SPM 1000b

I know what you mean about your dear old MF P270, I found it difficult to part with mine and ended up bi-amping the tweeters with it...worked a treat. I'm sorry that doesn't help you with your problem. I'd speak to a specialist dealer familiar with your pre-amp, I use Doug Brady in Warrington...
