Just a small correction. The only thing the older PS3 cannot do is output HD Audio via Bitstream to your AV receiver. It pretty much does everything else alright. As long as you have an AV receiver which decodes HD Audio and has HDMI inputs, you should be fine.

Just check whether you connected your sub to the "Subwoofer pre-out" (usually a purple coloured jack) on the Onkyo. It is a common mistake to plug the sub into the wrong output.

Hi Andrew! I do have a feeling that the LPCM output over HDMI from the PS3 lacks in dynamics, my Onkyo 805 outputs a more dynamic sound when I bitstream the core audio (downgraded to Dolby Digital or DTS). On LPCM, the sound seems very restrained. It's a shame the PS3 doesn't output the HD...
