Just thought I would thin it down a bit. Top 10 overall is too few.

I don't listen to much metal these days, but I have quite a collection I still listen to...

Here's mine...

Sepultura - Arise

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

Metallica - And Justice for all

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sick

Faith No More - The Real Thing

Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients

Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments

Death Angel - Act III

Pantera - Vulgar display of Power

*Shels - Sea of the Dying Dhow

Not a massive fan of metal, are you including heavy rock, and metal punk?

If so:

AC/DC - Back In Black

AC/DC - If You Want Blood You've Got It

Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing

I have albums by Sabbath, Zepp, Deep Purple, Motorhead and others, but I can't say that I've played them enough to say if I actually like them.

I don't really 'get' metal but would rather like to. Which of those albums would you consider the most accessible for a non-devotee?

(That was a question for fr0g, but anyone could help out if they're so inclined.)

Depends. What aspects of metal do you find hardest to 'get'? For most it's the aggressive vocals, so steer clear of Death or Black metal. Something like Pantera's 'Vulgar Display Of Power' is a good starter metal album, not too heavy, with some nice catchy hooks.

Out of my list, Faith No More and Death Angel. More funk metal really.

Although I think Metallica's "And justice for all" album is very accessable.

Faith No more...

Picking 10-or-so from about 700 was always gonna be tricky, but I've tried to choose albums that I go back to regularly despite having owned them for 10/15/20 years, or the pick of the crop of recent purchases......

Opeth - Blackwater Park

Cynic - Focus

Tool - Lateralus

Fear Factory - Obsolete

Neurosis - Through Silver In Blood

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity

Textures - Silhouettes

Devin Townsend - Terria

The Faceless - Autotheism

Veil Of Maya - Eclipse

And a band that's a recent discovery for me, my current favourite CD..... Uneven Structure - Februus..... Brutal, ambient, space, prog, tech-metal!

Hmm, I'm not sure I even know the answer to that! The animalistic vocals I do find odd, although if they're mixed up with a different kind of vocals I find it less troubling. I also struggle with anything I find a bit 'wall of noise', but I assume I'm missing some of the subtlety. I prefer things a little more 'melodic', if that's the right word. Catchy hooks sounds like a good start, I have added your and fr0g's suggestions to my current Sonos list so thanks to you both.

You could try Pelican or Rusian Circles, they are instumental metal, melodic and pretty progressive.

You could also try Metalica S&M, its a live recording of Metalica performing with an Orchestra. Epic. The S&M version of Devils Dance is amazing.

In which case, check my list in the 'rock' thread, much of which was regarded as 'metal' when it came out... :)
Ok, ta. There's a few bands I haven't heard of in your lists, which 2 or 3 would you recommend as most metally yet accessible?

Thanks. I like Pelican as a band name. Album with most interesting cover art from both added to list!

No Nile? Annihilation Of The Wicked is stunning.

Lawnmower Deth's 'Oh Crikey, It's...' is brilliant and hilarious.

Death are awesome, Morbid Angel too, can't pick a favourite album.

Also worth a look are Vader, Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Burzum.

Oooooo...... I do love 'Superunknown'....... :?

Not really Metal though, is it.
It's heavier than Nirvana though, I must try and get a CD of that album, Badmotorfinger's alright as well.

Anyway, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Slayer's Reign in Blood, it's the only album I'd bother to list for this. 30 years old this year, unbelievably...

I really like "System of a Down" - who claim "Alternative Metal (Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Experimental Rock)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_of_a_Down

Some very likable and complex harmonies and not the usual verse, chorus, verse chorus stuff.

More like Intro, verse, middle bit, verse, chorus, change major to minor bit (or reverse), verse, chorus and end section.

See what you think:

I Also like:

Korn - Issues

Breaking Benjamin - Phobia

Lacuna Coil - Comalies

Rammstein - Mutter
