Hey guys!

I've recently bought a Marantz PM5004 integrated amp, as my first foray into the world of Hi-Fi. I'm planning to feed it from an old Dual 1226 turntable, as well as from the TV (digital out, through a Pro Ject DAC FL).

However, I can't decide on the speakers for it. I was originally looking at a pair of Klipsch RF-52 II, but now I'm a bit put off by the frequency response (going up to 25khz only). What would you suggest around the 500 quid mark?

PS: I mainly listen to all sorts of music, from Classical to Blues to extreme Metal and why now... some electronic stuff as well.

Cheers,

Catalin

What kind of frequencies do you think you can hear? I'm assuming you're not a dog or a bat or something of that nature...

Like The_LHC says what sort of frequency response do you want?

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Speaker choice is very subjective and instead of looking at them you'll just have to go and listen to them ............. as many as you can.

Only you can decide what sounds good to you and in your particular listening area.

Nothing wrong with the Klipsch's really.

It's not about how high in frequency my hearing goes, but how much can the speakers reproduce from an actual recording. We all know how a frequency response graph looks like, so you should know although they're rated 25khz, there is a steep drop off towards the high end. Those 25khz are there, but they're too low in volume to hear.

Having a pair of headphones that go up to 30khz, I could easily hear those extra highs give detail to some instruments :)

Dude, there isn't a human being on the planet that can hear 25kHz AT ALL, let alone 30kHz!

I didn't say I can hear 25khz or 30 for that matter. I was saying that those specs are theoretical mostly and that I'd like something to go up to 30khz so they could reproduce 18khz at a high enough volume to be... hearable :)

Go 2nd hand if you can

B&W 602.5's or 603 S2's or S3's OR Monitor Audio BR5's or BX5's

All will work well with your amp and will withstand a few upgrades as well!

Interesting advice... I'll see if I can source any of them locally, although I'm afraid it will be rather difficult in my part of Europe :(

Leaving aside the TV (digital out + DAC etc.) for a moment. What cartridge have you found for your Dual that can accurately portray frequencies above 25Khz?

Back to the telly. What are the highest audio frequencies broadcast? (By terrestrial Freeview or Sky or Virgin or whatever.) I don't know for sure, but I doubt they go as far up as 25kHz let alone exceed it.

Maybe someone knows this.

From my (rather poor) understanding, SACD recordings have the ultra-high frequencies and I think so does blu-ray (DVD too? I know speakers targeting home theatre use often go up abot 30kHz).

Whether these ultra-high frequencies that are beyond the audible spectrum actually have an impact on the audible spectrum is another matter, but some believe that they do (see Tannoy SuperTweeters).

I for one think these matter. Taking a look at the frequency response graph for some Audio Technica headphones (bit.ly/UCjwOx), we can see it have a severe drop over 10Khz. Well under the audible limit. They are rated at 28Khz in the specs, but like I said above, even if you could hear up to 28Khz, those headphones would not reproduce those frequencies at an audible level. Not even 18Khz.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the suggestions. The Tannoys look like a great value! I couldn't find any B&W second hand in my country so I'd scratch that off the list, but i might just shell out some cash for B&W 684... the front bass port looks like it could work really well in my room, as I'm forced to put the speakers back against a wall.

Actually, the setup is a bit more complicated. The main source of Audio will be a Raspberry Pi running XBMC (a pretty strange solution around these parts, I'm sure). This runs into the TV through HDMI (both video and audio). Audio will run from the TV SP/DIF output to a DAC and from there to the Marantz. Therefore, with high quality audio running all digital from the Raspberry to the DAC, frequencies shouldn't be a problem :)
