125kg EACH. Thats the weight of 2 small human-beings! I never new hi fi could get so crazy! I bet listening to them is a completely new experience. Anyone had the pleasure? What was it like?

Yes, heard them many times, including in the main control room at Abbey Road, where they have a multichannel set-up using these speakers all round.

They sound every bit as impressive as they look - one reason they, and their predecessors, are widely used for monitoring in classical studios - but it goes without saying that they need some driving, and top-notch partnering kit.

They are astonishing. Preferred the 801D for a couple of grand less though.

Certainly - much larger driver and far better looking. I've heard a pair of these at Abbey in one of their smaller monitoring rooms and they have astonishing resolution and a kick to the bass which makes you realise what you're missing with less able transducers.

This video should be of interest to you all; I've put it in stereo so the sound should be good: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyY-V1hpGI&fmt=18 Shame about the awful electronics driving them! The quality of the audio on this youtube video is outstanding though!

Here's another video of the 801Ds being driven by Classe equipment: The sound is amazing even on a compressed video, you can hear the "air" in the recording! How is that so?! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Qebnq7Qy-vg&feature=related&fmt=18

Don't tell us that, on top of being a pro photographer for the BBC and a spy and everything else, you are a recording engineer at Abbey Road as well!

I am still finding it hard to believe you were bought a Volvo to drive (despite being 15 at the time of writing) http://whathifi.com/forums/post/159312.aspx

How did you get to go to Abbey Road, do they do open days or something?

It was a B&W product launch, hosted by Alan Parsons.

Or were you asking

Sorry Andrew I was asking the one who doesn't have the industry connections (I think?).

Ive just got back from a quick jam with dave gilmour on his house boat studio and he reckons they are rubbish !!. Sorry cant hang around cos ive a sneaky date with angelina jolie later and the lear jet needs a re-fuel. Ouch ,pain from the tongue in cheek there.

Actually we went as a music trip for the GCSE music students at our school - ie, four of us.

It was very interesting and we had a chance to record ourselves there.

Next week I'm one of the photographers for George Sampson's (winner of BGT '08) Access 2 All Areas tour. So before any of you claim I'm not a professional photographer, please think again.
I still have my Volvo aswell, although I had to get a new clutch for it as the old one went. It's used when I go round my uncle's airfield (which he does have, don't say he doesn't).

Next you'll all be saying I don't have an A32...

Octopo:What happened to the GS1000?

I still have them, but I'm going to sell them soon as funds are required in other areas (need a new gearbox for the car and I'm starting up a vintage audio ebay shop). I swapped them for some Sennheiser HD600s which sound almost as good to my ears!

dont say i dont because i do...?

bet you're a hit with the debating society.

That A32 thing is all in your head too... 😉

"Or he'll come round to your house in his private Stealth Fighter and blow you up. Nyaaaah!!"

Just joshing you sir 🙂 I for one am jealous that I was not a successful photographer, musician, writer and composer, connoisseur of fine wines (or Volvo driver) at the age of 15 alas...

actually Hughes, while i dont doubt you are a compotent photographer you are not a professional one. A pro makes a living from doing it - you dont - simple.

I don't get money from anywhere else (anymore), so it's my only source of income; doesn't that mean it's professional? I thought being hired by some of the best photographers in the country to photograph some of the country's most famous people is classed as professional...seems I am wrong...

No, but it's something I'm toying with: Perhaps something for the christmas break.
