Wish to update radio facility in my hi-fi set-up

Being strictly 'old school' (by that I mean that I have no 'smart' anything - even my mobile is an old Nokia that sits in the car in case of an emergency) I thought I'd look on this forum for some sage advice ...

Within my hi-fi set-up I have an old Denon FM tuner (TU-1800) which I would like to upgrade to either an FM/DAB unit (extremely hard to find one at all these days) or, since it seems to be the way to go, maybe a machine that receives internet radio wirelessly (I understand that to be called 'streaming'), which can be connected to my amlifier via left & right analogue phono sockets as now.

I've recently been pointed in the direction of something called a Sonos Connect which might be appropriate, but from pictures of it there would appear to be no front panel display, so how do you know what you're scrolling through or indeed what it is you're eventually listening to? Presumably it would come with some sort of remote controller that has a viewing panel on it?

If it helps any kind soul who wants to reply to this thread, I have BT fibre optic broadband in the office upstairs, connected by an ethernet cable to my desktop PC in the same room. The internet speed is regularly a smidgeon over 70Mbps so I guess that's powerful enough for something in the living room to receive a wireless signal and 'stream' without breaking up or hanging. And please don't talk to me about 'apps' and the like .. as I said in my intro, I have nothing to view apps on, except my new Windows 8.1 PC which is tethered in the office!

Hi Rupert

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Secondly if you are looking for something not too technical, easy to setup and simple to use, may I suggest to you the Denon DNP720AE network music player, it combines a standard AM/FM tuner (sadly no DAB), internet radio with access to radio from around the world and is also able to connect to your PC to playback any music you may have on it.

It can connect wirelessly to your existing network but for best quality should be hard-wired, pictures and specs are available from the Denon website.

Hope this helps

Thanks macdiddy for both your welcome and your comments.

I've seen the Denon unit you suggest but somewhere it received a rather lukewarm review (can't remember where sadly). I'd probably still go with it if I can't find anything else that meets my needs, I've always had some Denon at home and rate the build quality and overall sound of their stuff.

The other weekend I was searching for other possibles to fit the bill and came across the following:

Cambridge Audio Azur 651T

Sansui DR201V

Sansui WLD-201L

Marantz NA7004

Rotel RT-11

Yamaha TD500

Onkyo T4030

Would you care to pass comment on any of these, please? Best advice is really all I'll have to go on as trying something in the home for a day or two is probably not really feasible, what with the lack of specialist hi-fi shops around these days!

Sorry I should have said in my reply that I own the Denon network player that I mentioned so I'm afraid that I cannot comment on the other players you listed.

I find the sound quality for the Denon to be good enough for my needs as I use it mainly when I can't be bothered to switch on my PC or if I want to watch sport on Sky and listen to the radio at the same time.

The only thing is that I have mine connected to an external DAC ( Digital to Analogue ) converter which to my ears gives a better sound than the standard left & right phono outputs.

Hope this helps.
