Wireless Router Interference

I am reorganising my lounge and want to put all electrical equipment into one unit, at the moment the hi-fi and TV/Blu Ray/Virgin Box are in 2 different places. I also want to move my wireless router into the lounge nearer the Virgin Media socket rather than running a cable for it through the house as it is at present.

If I put the modem and wireless router into the same cabinet as my stereo, TV/Blur Ray is it likely to cause any noticeable interference? For tidiness sake I would like everything in one place but not if it is going to be to the detriment to sound or picture quality.

Having your router so close to all that other kit is likely to cause significant interference. Try and keep your router as far away from other electrical equipment as possible.

Agreed. Wireless routers are more vulnerable than you might think.

Other networks, RF remotes, wireless telephones, microwave ovens, TVs -- but also electrical installations, and even the iron bars inside a concrete wall might cause problems (= glitches, if used for music or video).

However, if you only avoid the obvious troublemakers, what seems like big problems might be solved by just a slight move of equipment.

Theoretically the wireless router will be better off away from your equipment. In practice, I myself have the router next to the Virgin box and it doesn't cause any problems to the rest of the equipment, nor the equipment on it. Whether using upgraded mains cables and interconnects et al (as I do) helps out in that respect or not is a debate I will leave for another thread elewhere - there's bound to be one not far away

Only way to know for sure is to try it out, especially regarding the wireless signal strength - where I lived previously (a one bedroom flat) the wireless signal was poor in the room next door to the router; in my current place (3 bedroom semi) the signal is excellent upstairs and at the other end of the house. Fickle things these wireless routers.

From my experience i have not noticed any difference having it with my system or other side of the room, both wireless & wired connections all work fine with no issues & never noticed any interference with anything.

I have a tiscali router & is wireless so i have 3 items ethernet plugged in & my laptop is wireless, no matter where it was it all worked fine.

But as mentioned, it is supposed to be better away from other equipment, but i never had an issue & at present it is away from my system.

I have my wireless router on my rack next to a Sonos ZP90 and all my other kit, I've never had any problems whatsoever. I have it on the rack because half the equipment is plugged into it (or a gigabit switch which now also lives on the same rack).

I have my router right near my kit, and again no problems.

The only thing that does cause problems is when the microwave goes on !
