I am not great with hi fi so work with me. i have a new laptop with optical out. can i connect my laptop via a dacmagic to my denon 1910 amp and then will connect to a couple of speakers in a different room. the 1910 amp is for my hd tv set up so not sure if sonically it works for hi fi. if that does work, can you recommend a pair of speakers to go with and can they be wall mounted? wall mounted because I have two kids (5&1) and floor mounts and stands would be a hazard. will this work but more importantly will the sound quality be there. thanks

I don't see why not. The connection from the DAC Magic to to the Denon 1910 is just straight analogue audio. The bit that would worry me is how well (or indeed if) the laptop's optical out worked (previous bad experience here). When you say Denon 1910, I think you mean the AVR 1910 which is a surround amp. Yes? If so then why not start by connecting the laptop directtly to your 1910 with optical? The sound quality wouldn't be the same as the DAC Magic but it would prove that the optical out works properly.

As for speakers, you need to say what your budget is. Again, if you have the AVR 1910 amp then why not consider a set of good quality surround speakers that are designed to be wall mounted?

Firstly " can i connect my laptop via a dacmagic to my denon 1910 amp".

yes you can.......use the opitcal or usb to the dacmagic then some reasonable phono cables to an input on the 1910

Second

The Denon 1910 has a PURE DIRECT mode which enhances music reproduction by turning off all unwanted processors, even the screen. I think this would work for your extra couple of speakers in the other room, it works for the main speakers, my friend has this amp and it sounds very reasonable in this mode.you would have to check in your manual. The Pure Direct button can be found on the flipside of the remote control.

You didn't mention any kind of cost for the pair of speakers, if you are wall mounting you will need a pair that are unfussy about positioning.

the Wharfedale Daimond 10.1 (£200) or the Dali Lektor 1 ( £250) or 2 (£299) would be very nice. The Roth OLI 1's (£79) are very easy to postion and very clear,,,,,,but might not have the bass responce you are after.........

..............you will need to find yourself a good pair of strong, sturdy wall brackets.

I don't know if you need advice for some surround speakers or if you are sorted...

hope this helps

thanks for that. yeah £300 is fine for speakers, was thinking wharfedales but will check out Lektor's. what i want to know, if its possible to answer, is that my outlay will be £600 ish for speakers, dac, cables, wall mounts etc, will the sound quality be good and how good. as a novice its hard to know and understand ie will there be more clarity in the vocls and seperation of instruments rather than listening to a regular cd playback ?? i'm branding these big words about only because of what i read but, if say, I buy a different amp would we be talking a different ball game ?? is the £600 well spent or a waste? educate me guys so that I do get a step up

Hi again Bret,

The DAC is a good idea if you are going to run everything off computer.....as far as sounding as good as CD well it really depends on the quality of digital music you have on your computer. If they are losslessfiles then into the DAC it would sound comparable to a very good CD player. Most people have mp3 files and the like at a lower bit rate, however when fed through the DAC these files improve dramatically and produce a very good sound. Also if you have a regular cd player with a digital out you could run that into the DAC as well to possibly improve it's sound. With the DAC pluuged in you will also be able to run good qaulity sound inot the speakers in the TV room

I currently use the Beresford Caiman DAC and find that really good when used with files on the computer and Spoitfy etc.

I am still presuming that you have a 5.1 speakers set up to the Denon as well........

Personally I think that having seprate speakers running off the Denon into another room for music listening as a great idea. The Denon in particular is better than most AV amps in this price range at producing good music reproduction.

The only Caveat(spelling) is that you will not get the best out of the Speakers if they are on wall brackets. But that's the brakes dude.

Your other option is to have a separate system in the other room.

I.e. Dali Lector 1(£250) or Br1's(£160) or BR2's(£200).....Fatman Itube Amp on its own(£129)...plus DAC(£250)

This system would kick ass for your budget ....it all depends on how much flexibilty you want.

anyway ......more questions welcome....

hey that seems not a bad solution either, does me the favor of keeping it in the same room. so leptop into dac into amp to speakers ??

will the fatman accept the dac ?? ie connection wise

As far as sound quality goes the seperate system will be well ahead....and it might also give you the seperation from your kids for chilling out .....I have nutty kids too.

Ok so Laptop connected to the DAC via either Optical or USB,,,,,,,then Using a reasonable pair of Phono leads connect to one of the line inputs on the Fatman.....................it would be a really good tidy system.....as far as speakers go again it's either the Monitor audio BR1's the BR2's are really a bit big for wall mounting.......the Dali Lektor 2's.......or if you require less bass but incredibly clear music then the Roth Audio Oli1's.

I did mention the Dali lektor 1's but I don't think they are sensitive enough.......so maybe the Cambridge Audio s30.....or even the Tannoy RevolutionDC4 now available for £250 from Peter Tyson

The Fatman is available on it's own to use as an amplifier from Audio affair.....and other places

I have that kind of setup with a Denon avr1909. Connected the Dacmagic to the cd-input on the avr1909 and have my Denon dvd1740 and laptop connected to the Dacmagic.
I use Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's.
Also made a "quickselect" so the avr is always in pure direct mode when the dacmagic-input is selected. And it does sound very nice.

But I don't think the Wharfs would be ideal for wall mounting: they have a bassreflex port on the back.

Mind you, to return to the original question, you could always connect the computer direct to a digital input on the receiver...

thanks, really appreciate the informative advice u have both given

I first did that too, but when using the Dacmagic, the music becomes alot more open and detailed. (To me)Definately worth the investment.

But trying it for yourself is the best way to find out if,for you, the added details and soundquality is worth the price.
