i think your biggest problem is moving from the infinite contrast on your crt to an LCD panel.. you might prefer the deep black levels of plasma.. but they are not without their own set of issues..

have you any unsheilded speakers close to the tv? i know that would have caused issues in the past with crt.. but not sure if its an issue with lcd..

Well Sardine steak the 1st set had backlight bleed in 3 places around the centre of the screen, 1 patch was about 7 inches long and quite bright.

Ah, Kitkat, so sad to hear you've had troubles again. I did, however, mention when you had backlight problems with your first set that these can (unfortunately) sometimes come in batches.

Wonder if you should get a full refund and take your money elsewhere? (This is no slur on your Richer Sounds branch, by the way - a retailer can't help what batch of TVs it gets sent).

Hello Clare, I don't think this problem is down to the backlight, the picture looks really good until a dark scene then the blacks take on a green look and the whole picture has a green haze and in 1 corner the colours change from light to dark, its nothing like the fault on the 1st set.

I think you live in the past - it is plasma which cant show deep blacks ( except for Pioneer Kuro ). Panasonic have rising blacks, and the other plasma marks are showing dark gray with lowest at around 0.04.

To the subject on backlight bleeding - some LCD have it, others not. The task is to spot which models havnt got this ( reviews ).

On top of this - we have to stear in a jungle of low quality, noise, flicker, floating blacks, etc etc - on LCD and plasma - 2010 wasnt the year - we must sincerely hope this will be better in 2011.

Yes, because all sets are identical, so you'd never get a review set not showing backlight issues and then find other sets do show it.

Hmm, hang on a sec...

i havent seen many LCD (LED or normal backlit) with deeper black levels that my Panasonic VT20.. sure it has some floating blacks.. but when its singing its pretty sweet...

whats the lowest black level quoted for LCDs these days?

i've seen plenty of LCD with horrible inconsistencies in backlighting.. its way more annoying to me than the odd instance of floating blacks.. my friends Panasonic 42D25 LED ... when watching 2:35:1 movies in dark scenes you can clearly see where the lamps are positoned at the edges of the screen..

i think many put Kuro quite rightly up on a pedestal.. but it was a very expensive product that still made a loss for Pioneer.. the trick for the likes of Panasonic is to produce a screen to equal or better the Kuro's at a price they can sell quantities at and not make a loss.. i would pay a fair bit extra for an 'elite' model if it ticked all the boxes.. i just wish Pioneer had made a 42" or 46" KRP500...

Well just to let you all know I exchanged the 2nd faulty Samusung 32" lcd on Thursday and after talking with the guy at Richer Sounds (who I must say have being excellent unlike past experiences with some big companies C is a clue) I brought a Panasonic Plasma 37" which after a 32"crt and lcd is a good jump in size, now I know to some of you a 37" is still quite modest with your 42" or 50" but its pretty impressive to me, it was very easy to setup and already have an exellent freeview picture via a Humax pvr not hd but as good as my crt, upscaled dvd looked really good and expect blu-ray will too. Just a word of warning, I tried to convince my misses that it was the same size as the tv I sent back but even though she has no interest in these things, and I quote "a tv is just a tv there all the same as long as you can see the picture" she could tell it was bigger, I told her it was just a trick of the light but to no avail so be warned if you plan to sneak a larger tv in when your partner is'nt looking hopping they want notice think again

I have yet to see any LCD that comes anywhere near a good plasma and there's nothing on the market remotely comparable to a Kuro. Before I bought mine, I was clueless and got great advice here, which was;

1) Go to a specialist store where you can compare plasma & LCD alongside each other - pop in a BluRay with some motion-heavy detailed shots - the opening heli-rescue scene in Costner's 'The Guardian' sorts the men from the boys here. I compared a Sony Bravia to a Panasonic plasma. No comparison.

2) Start comparing plasma's. I did this also and there was a marked gap between Pioneer Kuro's and everything else. Unfortunately they are no longer available :( But, recent Panasonic plasma's are great TV's.

Backlight inconsistency can be a problem on edge lit LED LCD TVs, and have of course been commented upon by some reviews. I tried a Panasonic L37D20, and had to return it because of "bleed" in two corners, visible on dark scenes. exchanged for a PanasonicL37V20B, and the picture is quite stunning, dazzlingly sharp (HD via Virgin cable, but excellent via the inbuilt tuners), and with brilliantly deep black where needed in dark scenes, it has no backlight bleed or inconsistensies, the screen on blank grey or black is entirely even. Interestingly, a review in Tech Radar magazine complained in reviewing this model of some such problem, while What Hi Fi did not, nor do I. so I can only conclude that possible there may be occasional variation along the production line. Try it in the store first! And use a THX disc for setup.
