Why do CD players have these connections

Hello All

Can anybody tell me why CD players have optical and coaxial digital outputs and also give me an example of what they can be used for.

so they can be connected to an external dac such as the beresford or ca dacmagic. the theory being that an external dac will be better than the internal dacs on lower end/mid priced cd players and pc's etc

Is that all they can be used for, its just CD players have their own DACs, so can adding an extra DAC really make that much difference.

or you can plug them directly into an AMP that has its own DAC. and DACS can make a big difference.

Also, if you have a CD recorder or a Minidisc recorder, you can transfer music digitally.
