I'm looking to buy my first HDTV soon and am a bit bewildered by all the various options!

I sit 2.8 meters from the screen, and have quite a large lounge. I'll mainly use it for watching DVD's and playing Playstation 2 games. I've been looking at TV's around 40'', and have a budget of around £1000. I'm also looking for a good upscaling DVD player and new surround system, but don't know if I'll be able to afford them with my budget.

Any advice you can give to this HDTV virgin would be much appreciated!

If it were my money I would go for either the Samsung PS42Q97HDX Plasma or the Panasonic TH42PX70 plasma as you will get far better results when watching your dvd than any LCD I have ever seen in this price bracket (or any price bracket come to that) and both are easily bought for well under a £1000 which will leave you with more than enough to get your dvd player say the Denon dvd1940.

Thanks for that. I've been warned off of plasmas because of the danger of screen-burn. Is this a serious problem, especially considering that most freeview channels have a station ident at the top of the screen?

I am on my second plasma screen with my first now resideing in my bedroom and neither show any signs of screenburn at all, also taking into account my first screen had none of the anti screenburn tech found on modern screens. If you screen is used for normal viewing you will be ok even with freeview and sky as screenburn only really comes into play when static images are displayed for prolonged periords of time.
