Which Receiver/Speaker package

Be gentle, I'm greener than the grass!!

I've just bought a Panasonic TX37-LZD81 mainly because terrestrial TV reception where I live is pitiful and also because I'm not allowed Sky!! I've already got a Sony PS3 hooked up to the TV via HDMI and also have an old Sony DAV-S100 5.1 DVD system which has limited connections.

I'm thinking about ditching the Sony DAV system and replacing it with a Sony STR-DA2400 receiver and a suitable speaker package. Can someone offer some advice on which speakers would suit the system best? I should add that I would like the speakers to be mounted on stands and not too intrusive.

Also, what would be the best way to connect the system once installed? Should I connect the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI and to the receiver via the optical output?

Thanks in advance.

What budget? What size room? Also if you are not allowed Sky, how will you be allowed a dish to be mounted for Freesat??

Reference the PS3 - connect to reciever via HMDI (if chosen receiver has it)

Not allowed Sky.....not a local planning problem, simply a local wife problem!! Apparently I'll spend too much time watching sport, although I'm firmly of the opinion you can never watch too much sport!!

Thanks for the reply. My budget for the combined receiver and speakers is around £1k and I've found the Sony STR-DA2400 for £379 so around £600 for the speakers. I've read about the KEF KHT1005.2 and the KHT2005.3 and prefer the more diminutive size of the 1005s. Are these suitable for the receiver and can they be stand mounted?

Yes, the KEFs will be suitable, though I'd go for the 2005.2s or - if poss - the 3005SE speakers to make the most of the performance of the Sony.

Yes stands available - click here and then click accessories. I've seen them online for about £70 a pair.

Agree with all of the above reference the KEF's. Once you can attord the 2005's the 3005's are not that much more and the difference IMO is amazing.

Ref wife probs, this is cheaper than watching the football down the pub!!

Also its only 90minutes two or three times a week = total tv time 270mins

as opposed to Emmerdale + Eastenders + Coronation Street = 90minutes per night =450minutes per week minimum.

There is no argument against that one!! (i know thats what workedfor me!)

Thanks to all who responded....your advice is very welcome.

Hilly10 - you might be onto something there although it sounds painful and expensive

Andrew - I'll check the link and get surfing for the best prices.

True Blue - If I pass on my address will you send me the body armour you wore when you presented your extremely well-balanced arguement to your wife?? Seriously, will check out the KEFs.

Thanks again.
